Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Backstage

Recently, Year 6 and Year 5 have been working hard to learn lines and staging this years production ready to perform infront of the parents on the 29th and 30th June. We’ve all been working hard and it was a great success.

Here are some photos of Joseph backstage!

Book Fest

Year 5 & 6 went to Book Fest in Wimbledon Common to see the author Phil Earle.

He told us that he had written 22 books so far and has been writing for years. We will all be receiving a book of his, which has recently been published and isn’t yet for sale. So, we get it as soon as it is printed, which is very lucky.

Year 5 Sports Leaders in Action

Recently, some Year 5’s have been going to the KS1 Playground at lunchtime and have been leading sports with Year 1 and 2. The games they have been playing include hurdles, cones, skipping ropes, hoops, etc. They have all been enjoying themselves.

Some images of what they have been doing these past days:

Year 5 Science

In Year 5 last week, they measured the movement of their shadows and the sun with various different experiments!

Sound Construction

This week, Year Five and Six were incredibly lucky to welcome Sonoro Choir and Organisers of the Wimbledon International Music Festival to St Matthew’s. We were unsure how the day would unfold when we were told that we were being visited by a group of classical singers and artists but it turned out to be an unforgettable day. The morning began by listening to the group perform a classical piece of music. This is a video of Sonoro performing it here.

The choir then guided us through a variety of warm up techniques before we joined them in singing a beautiful version of ‘Bridge over Troubled Water.’ We were also very lucky to hear each of the choir members sing a solo during the morning. Jeff started by singing Maria from West Side Story, Nina then sung  a piece from the opera  Madame Butterfly and finally Jo sung a very moving piece from Gianni Schicchi. You can see another version of it here.

The afternoon session was lead by a lovely lady called Helen. We used art straws to create the bridges we had been singing about in the morning.

A thoroughly great day was had by all and we look forward to welcoming Helen back next week for a follow up art session.

Thank you Sonoro and Merton Music Foundation.

Another exciting week done!

Another exciting week done! This week we  have learnt about how the Moon orbits the Earth, what it’s like to go on a pilgrimage, how to be newspaper reporters, visited Wimbledon High School (so many fun experiments) and investigated how our shadows move and change throughout the day.

As part of our learning about Earth and Space we have been researching the artist Peter Thorpe and admiring some of his abstract space art. He is well known for painting rockets and began his rocket paintings in the 1980s as a way to use paint that he would have otherwise thrown away.

So inspired we were by his creativity that we decided to create our own…what a fun (and messy) process this was. Some of our masterpieces are below.

Have a great weekend!

Year Five become Sports Leaders

Another week done… this term is flying by. Just like our Science learning in Year 5! This week we learnt about the Greenwich Meridian and the different time zones around the World. Time really does fly when you’re having fun.

We also really enjoyed our visit from WHS last Thursday and are looking forward to our visit there on Thursday 10th October 2019.

One of the perks of being in Year 5 is the opportunity to be a Sports Leader. Our training and preparation is well underway and we had a great session with the Merton Sports Leader representative last week. We learnt how to set up a drill and how to explain and demonstrate it effectively.

This week we planned our own drills and created our own sports cards showing these.

We’re looking forward to trying out our drills soon. We’ll be leading lunch time clubs and helping Year 2 and 3 with their PE in no time.

Have a great weekend!
