Little Acorns – Class of 2021

Little Acorns has gone from strength to strength this year and we are so proud to say that all of our places were taken up this term!  A huge thank you to all our families for your wonderful support.  The children have had an amazing year on the forest-field and we could not be prouder of each and everyone them!  Here are some recent photos of their outdoor adventures:

What Our Parents Say

“Little Acorns is a fantastic provision that T absolutely loves. The photos we receive show happy and spontaneous children, enjoying and exploring the nature. We feel very lucky that he can attend all the sessions. We couldn’t ask for better nursery experience. Thank you so much to the whole nursery team it’s a genius idea to combine normal school nursery with forest school. It’s perfect and we have no suggestions as you thought of everything. Big thumbs up from us.”

“G loves little acorns, he always comes home telling me about the trees he has climbed or the bugs he has found. It is such a lovely environment you have created, where the children think they are playing on the field and don’t realise they are learning.”

“Little Acorns is the perfect place for A to learn, make friends and have a lot of fun. A was encouraged to learn by exploring their surroundings and immersing himself in inventive play. The staff provides a fun, homely environment with sensory equipment, books and a whole variety of other lively activities. Staff at the nursery work to offer the same high standard of care that they would want for their own. Thank you very much for all your hard work!”

“I has thrived at little acorns and it is everything we could have asked for in extended hours. I feel confident she is getting a well rounded day with plenty of outdoor time- what more could a three year old ask for! She settled quickly and the staff are wonderful- my only regret is that I wish it continued throughout the whole school!”

“F has thoroughly enjoyed Little Acorns from day one, aged just over three years old, when he came home telling us all the facts about foxes and how they are nocturnal.  He learnt that on a hunt on the field for fox dens, not by looking at pictures in a book or sitting still watching a film.  He adores the fresh air, climbing trees, getting grubby and understanding nature, learning the whole time.”

“Little acorns, outdoor forest afternoons, was an added bonus for us when choosing a preschool. Whilst we only get the morning sessions through the gov 15hr scheme having the option to increase to a full day & pay for afternoon sessions was very attractive to us. We decided to allow our daughter to stay regularly on a Monday initially, after a couple of weeks and lots of begging from her we moved this up to 3 of the 4 afternoons available as she loves having lunch and staying as a little acorn. They have had so much fun, no matter the weather; wrapped up in winter, wellies on in the rain, and sun hats on and shaded arts&crafts when sunny. The feedback system and many photographs of them having a great time makes it totally worth it. I am also so pleased they don’t have a uniform! They do get messy and most days they’ll come home in something other than the outfit they went in but they are always sent home in warm dry clothes. Not only has it been a fabulous ‘messy muddy play’ our daughter has learnt so much. Did you know a worm has 10 hearts? I didn’t expect a 4 year old to be sharing such interesting knowledge with me! She’s also already much better at yoga than I am! The staff are caring, nurturing and always smiling. The children always seem happy (and sad when it’s home time!) we’ll be very sad to leave preschool behind – if only it could last longer than a year!”

“N loves little acorns – he says it’s really fun to have his lunch in nursery! Initially I think it helped N settle to have a longer day with his friends. As time has passed it has been lovely to see and hear about his dances and his forest school art works. Thank-you to everyone for providing such a wonderful environment.”

“We are so thrilled with Little Acorns. We originally thought our son H would only do the mornings as he enjoys doing his own thing, but we thought we’d try him on an afternoon a week to get him used to longer days. The rest is history – he very soon ramped up to 3 afternoons a week and we are only not doing the full 4 because of a lunchtime commitment. He comes home happy, exhausted, full of enthusiasm and buzzing about what he’s been learning and doing outside. He’s growing in confidence too, which is fantastic. I wish he had another year!”

Our Very First Little Acorns Update

This is one of our first blog posts about Little Acorns, back when we had just started offering extended hours provision.

The Little Acorns used to eat their lunch in the main school hall but they currently eat in the classroom.

How are the new Little Acorns getting along?

This is a question I have been asked several times over the past couple of weeks! And the answer is wonderfully, of course!

For those of you who do not already know, Little Acorns is the name of the 30-hours provision we currently offer our 3 and 4 year olds here at St. Matthew’s.  If your child is in our morning Nursery class, you can also enrol them in our afternoon session which runs Monday – Thursday from 11.45am – 3.30pm.

The morning and afternoon sessions run continuously with the children staying at school for lunch.  You can pay for a hot school dinner or send your child in with a packed lunch.

If you would like to know more about what happens during the session, have a look at the outline of our Little Acorns day.

There is a fee for attending Little Acorns.  Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for funding to cover the cost.  You can find out more about this here.

If you have any further questions or might be interested in enrolling your child, please contact Louise Morgan in the school office: office@st-matthews.merton.sch.uk or speak to one of us at drop-off/pick-up.
