Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

This week we have been learning about newspaper reports. On Monday we looked at various newspaper articles and identified the key features.

We then started to plan our newspaper report to explain what happened to the whale in our book ‘The Snail and the Whale’ .

Next week we will be writing these reports ensuring to include a snappy headline and key vocabulary.

In maths we have been continuing to learn about multiplication. We drew arrays to solve an equation and developed our problem and reasoning skills by solving worded problems.

This week the children completed their Lenten Project by participating in a set of skills based circuits. Well done Willow Class!

Next week we will be visiting the Natural History Museum as part of our science learning about animals including humans.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team.

Sunshine At Last

Welcome back to a very sunny Summer Term.

We have started our new topic ‘By The Sea’ and our core text this half term is ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson. This week we learnt lots of facts about humpback whales and made an information poster. Did you know that humpback whales can grow up to 16 metres long? We then organised our facts by generating ideas for different sub-headings to use in our information pages.

In grammar we have learnt about the spelling rule for adding s or es to make a plural. We learnt that if the word ends in ch, sh, x or z we add ‘es’, if it doesn’t end in ch, sh, x or z we add ‘s’.

In maths we have been learning how to multiply two numbers together. First we used the language of ‘lots of’ For example: 3 X 5 is the same as 3 lots of 5.

We then begun to explore using arrays to represent a multiplication equation.

In history we have started to learn about seasides in the past by looking at photographs of beaches during the Victorian era. We studied the photographs carefully and wrote sentences to explain what we have found out and what we would like to find out.

This week we thought of  new group names for our tables. After voting, the winning five tables were:

  • Jellyfishes
  • Sharks
  • Killer Whales
  • Merpeople
  • Crabs

Next week it is the turn of the shark table for Show and Tell (Aaron, Edward, Sofia, Bella and Lily D).

We hope you all had a lovely break,

The Year One Team
