Year Two Blog Friday 24th Septemeber

This week we have been continuing place value in maths and practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We used a 100 square and began to recognise patterns in the number sequences.

In writing we have been learning how to write a diary entry. This week we have planned our diary entry, writing as the Lonely Beast. Next week we will publish our work.

In science we have been continuing our learning about materials. We learnt about the suitability of materials for different jobs. We asked big questions such as “Would jelly be a suitable material for a table?” and “Why are bricks suitable for buildings?”

On Spelling Shed, there are words for your child to practise reading and spelling that end in ‘dge’.

Every Thursday a new focus will be uploaded to your child’s Spelling Shed account. This week we have also included common exception words which we will be continued throughout the year.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Miss Glanville

How to Make Bob’s Favourite Sandwich

This week we have written a set of instructions to teach people how to make Bob’s favourite cucumber sandwiches. We have learnt that a good set of instructions will include:

  • Numbered steps
  • Bossy verbs
  • Pictures
  • Each step will be written on a new line

We then used our instructions to make the sandwich for Bob.

In maths we have been learning to represent numbers using different mathematical equipment.

In science we have been learning about transparent and opaque materials. We have learnt that transparent materials let the light through so we can see through them. Opaque materials block the light which means we cannot see through them and this causes them to form a shadow. We then selected appropriate materials to make a shadow puppet.

In phonics we have been learning the following sound:

air (that’s not fair)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

Congratulations to Clemmie and Patricio, who have been elected as our School Councillors.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

A Strange and Mysterious Planet

This week we have been learning how to write a description of a setting. We looked at a strange planet called Pandora and thought of adjectives to describe what we could see. We then wrote these descriptions as sentences in our books.

In maths we have been learning how to count forwards and backwards. We have completed number sequences as numerals and pictures.

In science we have continued learning about different materials and their properties. We helped Bob who needed some new items for his rocket. We told him which material would be best for a: chair, waterbottle, bookshelf and window by describing their properties.

In phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

ar (start the car)

oo (poo at the zoo)

There are words containing these sounds for the children to practise available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This half term we are learning about a Christian baptism. We would love to see any photos of the children at their own baptism service to display in our classroom. If you are happy to share these photos, please could the children bring in a copy of the photo next week or email a copy to the School Office.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Wednesday. Below is an attachment of the PowerPoint used to help explain routines in Year One.

Year Two Blog

This week we have started our new core text ‘The Lonely Beast’.

This is a story about a creature who is longing to find some friends so he departs on an adventure to the city.

In maths we have been learning about place value using place value grids, dienes and counters.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Tuesday 14th September.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville 🙂

A Very Sneaky Alien

This week we have started reading our class text ‘Bob Man on the Moon’.

We learnt about Bob’s day on the moon and all of the jobs he has to complete inside his rocket. Unfortunately, Bob’s favourite sandwich was stolen by a very sneaky alien.

To help Bob, we wrote wanted posters describing the alien’s appearance and personality. Our amazing posters helped Bob capture the alien and reclaim his lunch.

In maths we have been practising our counting. The children have also enjoyed playing ‘Guess My Number’ where they ask me questions to see if they can work out what number is on my board. Some of the most successful questions have been:

“Is it a 1-digit or a 2-digit number?”

“Is it odd or even?”

“Is it greater than…”

“Is it less than…”

We are looking forward to seeing you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session next week.

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂
