Meet Beegu

Welcome back, we hope you all had a restful half term.

This week we have started our new core text ‘Beegu’. In the story Beegu is a kind and curious alien who crashes on a strange and mysterious planet (Earth).

We learnt about Beegu’s experiences on our planet  and wrote lost posters describing her characteristics and appearance, to help her family find her. We learnt the word ‘anxious’ to describe how Beegu was feeling.

In maths we have been learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes using the language of: sides, corners, quadrilateral and faces. We also sorted the shapes based on their various properties.

To help Beegu learn about our planet Earth we also made an animal fact file for her, starting by identifying if an animal is a mammal, bird, fish, reptile or amphibian. We have learnt that not all birds can fly but they do have feathers, fish breathe using their gills and that we are a type of animal called a mammal.

This week in phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

air (fair, stair)

ew (chew, stew)

oo (poo, zoo)

Happy Harvest

This week we have been very busy editing and publishing our information pages all about Bob. We have labelled an information page using the vocabulary: title, introduction, sub-headings, picture and caption. We then edited our work from last week and published them on special paper.

After half term we will start our new core text ‘Beegu’.

In maths we have been learning about addition. We have learnt how to add two numbers together using pictures and a part, part whole model.

We hope you will enjoy our fantastic Harvest Service. A big thank you to Mr Peck who taught the children all of the songs during their singing assemblies this half term.

Getting Ready for Harvest

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week in Phase One we have been preparing for our Harvest Service.  The theme of the service this year is ‘God provides’. The children have been learning various songs and drama pieces ready to share with you all next week.

On Wednesday, Years One and Two went to the Royal Albert Hall to watch the ‘Primary Proms’ performance. It was a fascinating experience for the children as  they learnt about the various instruments and enjoyed listening to the music. Some even got up and had a boogie to the jazz band’s rendition of ‘Rocking Robin’.

Thank you to all of the parents who joined us on the trip and to Mrs Rainey for booking the tickets for the children.

Isle of Wight Fact Finders

Dear Parents/Carers

Spelling Shed continues to have high engagement and this is reflected in good results in our weekly spelling test. This week there are two spellings lists. The children will only be able to access their lists on Spelling Shed and will take home the appropriate paper resource. The children can freely access all of the resources on Maths shed this week.

In maths this week, we have been learning how to add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers to and from a 2 digit number. We have been focusing on how to exchange and when it is needed in addition and subtraction. The children are now adept at using the column method to solve harder mathematical equations. In English, the children have been starting to look at information pages. We will be writing an information page about the Isle of Wight for the Lonely beast. The children are excited about telling the Lonely beast about dinosaur fossils, attractions and different features of the Isle of Wight.

In R.E. this week we learnt about the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Next week we will be making our own Sukkahs. If you have any spare empty cereal boxes, could you please send them in with your child.

This Wednesday we had our key stage 1 trip to the Primary Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. It was a great success and the children had a lovely time listening to some fantastic music. All of the performers were of ages between 9 and 19, and after the performances I had several children say how they would love to do something like that when they are older!

Looking to next week, we will be finishing our topic of addition and subtraction by consolidating our knowledge of written methods, especially column subtraction, as well as writing our information pages.

Thank You

‘Thank you’.

Mr Quinn encouraged us this morning to think of those who help us at school and say a big thank you to them. I hope the children do similar at home. The children wrote some lovely messages for one another to say thank you on Thursday morning. Messages like:

“Thank you Benedict for helping me when I tripped.”

“Thank you Harrison for making me laugh.”

“Thank you Harry for letting me play in your game.”

“Thank you Matilda for taking me to the office when I bumped my head.”

The children have some challenging words to learn this week for the spelling test. There is no one rule for them all and so they may need to be creative in how they remember them. We tried to see how much each word would be worth in a game of scrabble. Perhaps you could challenge your child to a game this weekend? Don’t forget to login to spelling shed and get practising. The Man on the Moon

This week we have been making information pages writing about Bob and his job as ‘Man on the Moon’. We have learnt that an information page needs a title that is big and bold, a clear introduction and the information needs to be grouped.

In maths we have been learning how to add two numbers together and then calculate related addition facts. For example, if 12 + 8 = 20 then 8 + 12 = 20.

In science we have been learning about man-made and natural materials.

This week we enjoyed visiting the Royal Albert Hall to watch the Primary Proms. The children enjoyed listening to the different performances and learning about the various instruments.

During this half term we have been learning about a Christian baptism and wedding. On Friday we went to St Matthew’s Church where Mother Helen reenacted a baptism to show the children what happens during the service. Thank you to Mother Helen for inviting us to the church and to Mrs Warner for kindly lending us her very special Christening gown that has been passed down  generations in her family.

This week we have revised the following sounds:

Arrival of Autumn

It’s been another week of active learning in Phase One.

Year One have been busy making sandwiches, Year Two have been writing riddles about animals (and some teachers) and Year Three have been carrying out some exciting science investigations using clay and soil.

Today our new garden was officially opened.

The garden was built in memory of Alex Merriman who we keep in our thoughts as we remember all he did for our school during his time as Chair of Governors. To open the garden, the School Council performed a poem all about nature and a cherry tree was planted in his memory.

Riddle Me This…

Dear Parents/Carers

Spelling Shed continues to have high engagement and this is reflected in good results in our weekly spelling test. The spellings this week is the /s/ sound spelt as a ‘c’ before i, e or y. All of the children will be having the same spellings until half term. For Maths Shed I have set the children adding and subtracting number bonds to 20.

In maths this week, the children have been learning how to find 1 and 10 more or less and today we moved our learning onto adding and subtracting multiples of 10 from a 2 digit number. The children know the golden rule when adding or subtracting multiples of 10 is that the ones never change. In English, we started the week by publishing our Newspapers. We then moved onto writing our own riddles about different animals from around the world. The children produced some lovely descriptive writing and wrote excellent riddles.

In topic this week, we learnt about the human and physical features by sorting them. The children have been very engaged when learning about the Isle of Wight.. In Science we investigated how different materials can and cannot change shape. The children explored a variety of materials, including playdough, cork and sponge. In Guided Reading, we have been learning how to use our inference skills when looking at pictures to discover what the story is trying to tell us. We did this with two books: The heart and the bottle, and The Gorilla. We also designed our Christmas cards this week, that will be available to buy at some point in the future.

Looking to next week, we will be learning how to exchange with simple addition and subtraction; writing information pages and making and adding to maps of the Isle of Wight.

Rock Explorers

School work can be draining…but so can soil as the class discovered this week! We tested out some sandy and clay soils to see which ones soaked up the water and which drained it best. Like many school experiments they didn’t go to plan but a lot of fun was had by all!
In maths we have been adding and subtracting ones and tens from a three digit number with exchanging. Please get your child to practise on times table rock stars.
Yesterday afternoon, Mrs Warner hosted an enjoyable debate on whether it is OK to kill animals or not. The children were lively and very articulate I hear. Have a great weekend.

How to Make Bob’s Favourite Sandwich

This week we have written a set of instructions to teach people how to make Bob’s favourite cucumber sandwiches. We followed a set of instructions to make an alien spaceship and used this to identify the key features.

We have learnt that a good set of instructions will include:

  • Numbered steps
  • Bossy verbs
  • Pictures
  • Each step will be written on a new line

We then followed our instructions to make Bob’s yummy sandwich.

In maths we have been learning how to compare objects and amounts using the mathematical symbols: < > =

In science we have learnt about waterproof and absorbent materials. Bob needed our help designing a new suit. We tested a variety of materials to see if they if were absorbent or waterproof. In our conclusion, we decided that plastic or rubber would be the most appropriate material for Bob because these materials were waterproof and stronger than tinfoil.
