Happy Harvest

This week we have been very busy editing and publishing our information pages all about Bob. We have labelled an information page using the vocabulary: title, introduction, sub-headings, picture and caption. We then edited our work from last week and published them on special paper.

After half term we will start our new core text ‘Beegu’.

In maths we have been learning about subtraction using the language of ‘taking away’. We have solved subtraction equations and word problems, drawing pictures to help us in our calculations.

We hope you all enjoyed our fantastic Harvest Service. A big thank you to Mr Peck who taught the children all of the songs during their singing assemblies this half term. The children performed our song ‘Roast Turkey’ beautifully, describing all of the delicious food that people eat during Thanksgiving.

Last week Miss Luetchford and Mrs Cronin held a Phonics Workshop to explain how phonics is taught at our school. Thank you to all of the parents and carers who came. We will be sending out a copy of the phonics booklet to all parents after half term.

Congratulations to Lenny and Eliza, who have been voted as our School Councillors.

This week, we have enjoyed learning about Elizabeth’s cuddly unicorn, Eddie’s water gun, Toby’s story writing, Ranga’s transformer, George’s animal headband and Nicky’s magnetic map. After half term it will be the turn of the ‘But Martin!’ table for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful half term,

The Year One Team

The Man on the Moon

This week we have been making information pages writing about Bob and his job as ‘Man on the Moon’. We have learnt that an information page needs a title that is big and bold, a clear introduction and the information needs to be grouped.

In maths we have been learning how to add two numbers together and then calculate related addition facts. For example, if 12 + 8 = 20 then 8 + 12 = 20.

In science we have investigated which materials float and which materials sink. We made careful predictions before carrying out our experiment.

In phonics we have been learning the sounds:

oi (spoil)

oy (boy)

There are words containing these sounds for the children to practise available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This week we have enjoyed learning about Issa’s toy car and Caitie’s cuddly ‘Rainbowy’, Jan’s satellite ‘Comet 4’, Grace’s cuddly ‘Shimmers’ and Theo’s toy dinosaur. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Roaring Rocket’ table (Toby, Elizabeth, Eddie, Ranga, Nicky and George) for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

How to Make Cucumber Sandwiches

This week we have written a set of instructions to teach people how to make Bob’s favourite cucumber sandwiches. We have learnt that a good set of instructions will include:

  • Numbered steps
  • Bossy verbs
  • Pictures
  • Each step will be written on a new line

In maths we have been learning how to compare objects and amounts using the mathematical symbols: < > =

We have begun to learn how to partition a number into two parts to help practise the rapid recall of our number bonds to 10 and 20. We will continue this learning next week.

In science we have learnt about waterproof and absorbent materials. Bob needed our help designing a new suit. We tested a variety of materials to see if they if were absorbent or waterproof. In our conclusion, we decided that plastic or rubber would be the most appropriate material for Bob because these materials were waterproof and stronger than tinfoil.

This week we have been revising the sounds we have learnt so far in phonics. On the Spelling Shed there are lists for the children to practise the following sounds:

  • igh (fly high)
  • oa (goat in a boat)
  • ar (start the car)
  • ee (what can you see?)
  • ow (blow the snow and brown cow)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This week we have enjoyed learning about Lucy’s cuddly ‘Rose’, Jiyong’s keyring, Lenny’s toy car, Lilly’s puppy ‘Snowball’ and Ben’s holiday diary describing his adventures in Ireland and Spain. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Q Pootle 5’ table (Issa, Caitie, Grace, Theo, Jan and Gabriel).

In P.E we have been encouraging the children to get changed before the end of this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peTnXmZxuZQ

Please could you help your child practise fastening their buttons and tying their tie in a smart knot.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team
