Fruit Salad for Beegu

This week we have been learning how to write a set of instructions to help teach Beegu how to make a fruit salad. We have sequenced each of the steps and learnt that bossy verbs tell you what to do. Next week we will be writing our instructions and using them to then make the fruit salad.

In maths we have been continuing to learn about the properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes.

In science we have learnt how some animals use camouflage to help them hunt their prey or hide from predators in order to survive.

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

au (haunt, August, sauce)

ir (girl, twirl)

ou (shout, cloud)

Next week it will be the performance of our Christmas show ‘How Charlie Brown Discovered Christmas’. The children have been very busy practising their lines and songs and we hope you enjoy their performance.

This week we have enjoyed learning about  Issa’s paper aeroplane, Jan’s bird ‘Birdy’, Theo’s panda ‘White’, Grace’s hedgehog and rabbit ‘Ava and Freya’, Caitie’s cuddly dog and Gabriel’s Switch and Go Dino. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Roaring Rocket’ table (Toby, Elizabeth, Eddie, Ranga, Nicky and George) for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

We Are Writers

This week we’ve been busy in Year One writing our own version of the story of ‘Beegu’. We used story maps to help sequence the events and then wrote the story in our English Books. We worked hard to include lots of descriptive language.

In maths we have been learning to identify  and describe the properties of 3-D shapes. Next week we will be using our understanding of 2-D and 3-D shapes to create repeating patterns.

In science we sorted animals into a Venn diagram.

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

wh (whistle, whisk, whale)

ph (phone, alphabet)

This week we have enjoyed learning about Lucy’s wobbly tooth, Levi’s toy warthog, Ben’s toy dinosaur, Jiyong’s toy sword and Lilly’s fluffy bunny. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Q Pootle 5’ table (Issa, Caitie, Grace, Theo, Jan and Gabriel).

Thank you to our School Councillor’s Lenny and Eliza who helped sell our Christmas decorations to raise money for our school link charity ‘The Lunch Bowl Network’. This charity provides food and care to the Angel Kindergarten School in Kibera. We hope you enjoy hanging the handmade decorations on your tree this Christmas.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Welcome to Planet Earth

This week we have been teaching Beegu about our planet Earth. We have learnt lots of facts about Earth. Did you know that Earth is called the Goldilocks planet? This is because it’s not too hot, not too cold, not too dry and not too wet which allows life to grow. We grouped the facts we had learnt and wrote information pages about Earth.

In maths we have been learning about 2-D shapes. We sorted the shapes into a Venn diagram and then described their properties.

We used the shapes to create a repeating pattern and have learnt that  a four sided shape is called a quadrilateral.

In science we have been learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We created a food chain to show what different animals eat.

We have started rehearsing for our Christmas performance of ‘How Charlie Brown Discovered Christmas.’ This week the children have taken home a letter describing what clothing is required for their costume. If you have any questions  please come and speak to a member of the Year One Team.

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

oe (toe, woe)

o-e (bone, phone)

ue (blue, rescue)

Next week it is the turn of the Dr Xargle table (Levi, Lenny, Lucy, Lilly, Ben and Jiyong) for Show and Tell.

This half term our School Council members have been busy organising a fundraiser to raise money for our school link charity ‘The Lunch Bowl Network’. This charity provides food and care to the Angel Kindergarten School in Kibera. All of the children in the school have made a product to sell at our fundraising event. These items will be on sale on Wednesday 21st November from 3.15 until 3.45 in the Reception playground and covered area. In Year One we have made some beautiful Christmas decorations from salt dough to decorate your Christmas tree. We look forward to seeing lots of you there to help raise money for such a good cause.

Thank you to all of the parents for being so understanding about the cancellation of Parents Evening last Thursday. My infected tooth has now been sorted and I am feeling much better. I look forward to seeing you next Thursday for your consultation.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Meet Beegu

Welcome back, we hope you all had a restful half term.

This week we have started our new core text ‘Beegu’. In the story Beegu is a kind and curious alien who crashes on a strange and mysterious planet (Earth).

We wrote lost posters describing Beegu’s characteristics and appearance to help her family find her. We learnt the word ‘anxious’ to describe how Beegu was feeling.

In maths we have been learning addition and subtraction fact families.

E.g. If 3 +7 = 10 then 7 + 3 = 10, 10 – 7 = 3 and 10 – 3 = 7.

In science we have started our new topic ‘Animals Including Humans’. We have learnt about the key features of:

  • Mammals
  • Amphibians
  • Birds
  • Reptiles
  • Fish

Congratulations to Finn who was awarded the ‘Star Writer’ certificate this week for his Bob Man on the Moon information page. Finn worked hard to write on the line, inside the line, include his capital letters and full stops; well done Finn.

This week we have enjoyed learning about Matilda’s holiday diary, Albie’s gem collection, Marcus’s golf club and Sean’s toy. Next week it is the turn of the Beegu table for Show and Tell (Ramir, Valeri, Caroline, Lewis, Eliza and Guy).

In phonics this week we have been revising the sounds: ‘ai’ and ‘ay’. We have also been introduced to the spilt digraph ‘a-e’. Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team
