A Letter From A King

Last week week we continued reading our core text ‘Into the Forest’.

We noticed that a wolf was hiding behind one of the trees and this got us to thinking about what other fairy tale villains could be lurking in the woods. To help people catch the villains we wrote a wanted poster describing a fairy tale villain. We worked hard to include adjectives to describe their appearance and characteristics.

This week we read the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

After we had finished the story we were surprised to receive a letter from the King asking for our help.  The letter read:

Dear Willow Class,

I am writing to you to ask for your help. As you are aware, Jack has recently found a golden harp and hen which allows him to make golden eggs. This means that Jack has become one of the richest boys in the kingdom. Some people feel that Jack shouldn’t be allowed to keep the golden eggs because they are stolen property and now the whole kingdom can’t agree. Please can you help me decide what to do? I look forward to hearing your arguments for and against Jack’s actions and your help in sorting this matter is greatly appreciated.

Yours Faithfully,

King Charles

We had a class discussion debating whether Jack should be allowed to keep the money or if he should be made to pay it back. On Monday we will reply to the King’s letter, telling him what we think he needs to do.

In maths we have been learning how to add numbers within 20 using our knowledge of
number bonds. We worked practically using ten frames to help us see how number bonds to
10 can help us answer an addition problem.

In science we have been learning about the different parts of a plant. We dissected a plant carefully and looked at the different parts such as root, leaf, petal, pollen and stem.

This week we have enjoyed learning about Eliza’s special bear called ‘Bear Bear’ and hatchimal, Albie’s dragon and pterodactyl, Caroline’s dinosaur excavation kit, Ranga’s transformer , Grace’s teddy bear and Jiyong’s mini car that he made at home. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ table (Lewis, George, Marcus, Gabriel, Issa and Sean) for Show and Tell.

Congratulations to Issa who was awarded the Very Good Manners Cup in Monday’s assembly.  Issa always make an effort to be kind and polite to all of the teachers at school. He is the first to say please and thank you in the lunch hall. Well done Issa!

Next week we will be making some exciting fairy tale potions. Please can the children bring in a named empty plastic water bottle (by Friday) to use in their potion making.

The children are very excited about tonight’s disco!

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Into The Woods

Welcome back to the Spring Term, we hope you all had a restful Christmas break. Thank you so much for your kind words in our cards and generous gifts. It was very thoughtful of you all.

This week we have started our new topic ‘Into The Woods’. We read the story ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne.

The story is about a young boy who needs to deliver cakes to his grandma. To get to his grandmother’s house he needs to walk through a strange and mysterious forest. Along the way he encounters various fairy tale characters. When we read the story we noticed that there were also fairy tale items hidden throughout the forest. We then wrote a description of the setting in our English Books.

In maths we have been learning how to solve an addition equation by counting on. We used empty number lines to help us in our calculations.

In science we have started our new topic ‘Plants’. We wrote what we already know about plants on a class mind map and then used magnifying glasses to observe plants around the school closely.

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

o-e (bone, phone)

a-e (shape, snake)

i-e (kite, white)

u-e (cube, tube)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.edshed.co/login

Next week it is the turn of the ‘Goldilocks’ table (Lenny, Levi, Lilly, Lucy, Matilda and Valeri) for Show and Tell.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,
