Dear Parents and Carers,

Hello and welcome to Willow Class. The children have settled into the new classroom  and it has been lovely hearing about their summer adventures. We are looking forward to sharing our learning with you each week on this, the year one blog.

This week we have started our topic ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ where will be learning about space explorers. In class we read the book ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ and used adjectives to describe the aliens.  Next week we will start our new class text ‘Bob Man on the Moon’.

On Wednesday 15th September we will have our ‘Meet the Teacher’ meeting. This will be an opportunity to share the routines and learning of year one with you all. Please see the email from Mrs Saunders for more information.

Last week we enjoyed our visit to Kew Gardens. We went on a picture treasure hunt where we explored the gardens and then had lots of fun in the Children’s Garden.

This week we were very lucky when we got to meet and learn about some farm animals. Thank you to Miss Cronin for organising this lovely visit.

During our Victorian workshop in June we learnt the story ‘How the Ice-Cream Got its Cone’. This week we retold the story in our English Books.

In phonics we have been reviewing the sounds we have learnt this year.

This week we have been writing information pages about Windrush Day. We learnt about the Windrush Generation and the importance of the day.

In R.E we drew a storymap to sequence the Creation Story. Next week we will be starting our new R.E unit about Judaism.

On Wednesday, the Year Sixes’ performed a few of their songs from the show ‘Alfie’.  Year One loved it, especially ‘A Hard Knock Life’. Well done Year Six.

This week we have written our set of instructions to teach Mr Grinling how to make the dip tzatziki.

We then followed our set of instructions and made the dip in class.

We enjoyed eating it!

In maths we have been partitioning and comparing numbers. Next week we will be continuing place value and finding one more and one less of a number within 100.

This week the children performed their first ever class assembly to Year Two, Mrs Warner and Mr Quinn. The children spoke with great clarity and performed their songs beautifully. Mr Quinn was so impressed with all of the facts they shared. We will be sharing a recording of the assembly with you next week.

This week we started our new class text ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’.

In the story we met an industrious lighthouse keeper called ‘Mr Grinling’ whose lunch kept being stolen by some pesky seagulls. We learnt about the jobs Mr Grinling had to do and wrote an explanation text explaining how to be a lighthouse keeper.

In maths we have been  learning how to order and partition numbers within 100. We used dienes to show how many tens and ones were in a 2 digit number.

In science we have started our new topic ‘Materials’. We sorted materials into a Venn diagram.

In R.E we have started our new unit’ What Responsibility has God Given us to Look after the Earth?’. In class we read the Creation Story and wrote down parts of the story we found puzzling. We then walked to St Matthew’s Church where Mother Helen and Father Alistair showed us the parts of the church and answered our questions.

This week we took part in our Victorian Seaside workshop. During the workshop we met a lady called Victoria who taught us lots of information about the Victorian era. We learnt that the beaches used to be separated for men and women. This was because women used to wear longer bathing costumes as it was seen rude to show anything other than your hands, feet and face.
