A Letter From a King

This week we read the traditional tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. After we had finished the story we were surprised to receive a letter from the King asking for our help.

We had a class discussion debating whether Jack should be allowed to keep the money or if he should be made to pay it back.  We then wrote letters to the King explaining our thinking.

In history we continued learning about changes over time by focussing on toys. We looked at a selection of toys from the past and talked about how they were similar and different to toys we play with today. Next week, we will make our own toy from the past- a ball in a cup.

This week we have learnt the ‘ur’ sound (nurse with a purse).

There are words containing these sounds for the children to practise available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Into the Forest

We read the story ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. The story is about a young boy who needs to deliver cakes to his grandma. To get to his grandmother’s house he needs to walk through a strange and mysterious forest. Along the way he encounters various fairy tale characters. When we read the story we noticed that there were also fairy tale items hidden throughout the forest.

In science we learnt about the different parts of a plant we can eat, although not everyone was a fan of the celery. We then used these different parts to make coleslaw.

This week we have learnt the sound ‘are’ (care and share).

Have You Seen These Fairytale Villains?

This week we wrote our wanted posters describing fairy tale villains. We worked hard to include descriptive vocabulary such as ‘elegant’, ‘smart’ and ‘tatty’ to describe their appearance and ‘sneaky’ and ‘sly’ to describe their characteristics.

In maths we have been learning how to find and make number bonds within 20.

In science we have been learning about the different parts of a plant and their function.

In art we have been learning about the artist William Morris.

We will be making our own William Morris inspired painting. This week we focused on sketching leaves and flowers from observation.

In phonics we have learnt the ‘aw’ sound (yawn at dawn). Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.edshed.co/login

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Into the Woods

Welcome back to the Spring Term, we hope you all had a restful Christmas break. Thank you so much for your kind words in our cards and generous gifts, it was very thoughtful of you all.

This week we have started our new topic ‘Into The Woods’. We read the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.

We wrote adjectives to describe the wolf’s appearance and characteristics. Next week we will be writing wanted posters to help people catch this villain.

In science we have begun our new topic ‘Plants’. We went on a plant hunt to observe the different plants we have growing at our school.

We opened a special time capsule that had been found in Mrs Sharon’s garden. We looked at the items and used the clues to help us think about who had buried the time capsule.

This week we have been reviewing our sounds.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas

This week, we recorded the children’s performance of ‘The Little Angel Who Nearly Missed It All’. We will be sharing the recording of this performance with you digitally.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Year One Blog: You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch

This week we read the poem ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough .

We looked carefully at the poem and identified the ‘secret strings’ that held the poem together:

  • Includes sound words
  • The sound describes the object
  • Each new description is written on a new line
  • Each stanza is four lines long

We then wrote our own version of the poem where we described the sounds that The Grinch might steal at Christmas time.

This week we performed songs from our Christmas Show.  The children have worked very hard to learn all of the songs and it was wonderful to see them perform their lines with such clarity and confidence. We hope it got you into the festive spirit. Next week, we will record the full performance of our show and share it with you digitally.

On Wednesday 15th December it will be the KS1 Christmas party. The children must bring in their own party food in a snack/lunch box as we are unable to share food this year due to  COVID guidelines. The children are invited to change into a party outfit for the afternoon. Please can the children bring in their outfit on Wednesday 15th December in a named bag.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Year One Blog: We Are Writers

This week we’ve been busy in year one preparing to write our own version of the story ‘Beegu’. We used story maps to help sequence the events and on Thursday we wrote our own versions of this story. The children worked hard to include lots of descriptive language such as ‘eerie, tentatively, anxious, stern and cruel’. We were so impressed with the children’s fantastic stories that, as a treat, we made making Beegu’s favourite snack; a tasty fruit salad with toppings!

In maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes.  We will continue to explore shapes and their properties next week.

In art we travelled to the continent South America where we made a Brazilian Carnival mask.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Year One Blog: Planet Earth

This week we have been teaching Beegu about our planet Earth. We have learnt lots of facts about Earth. Did you know that Earth is called the Goldilocks planet? This is because it’s not too hot, not too cold, not too dry and not too wet which allows life to grow. We grouped the facts we had learnt and wrote information pages about Earth.

Next week we will be retelling the story of Beegu.

In science we have been learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We created a food chain to show what different animals eat.

In geography we carried out a continent case study, focussing on the continent Africa. We located some of the different countries of Africa on a map, famous landmarks and learnt about what food comes from Africa. We enjoyed trying the different foods with pineapple and couscous being particularly popular.

We hope you all have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Year One Blog: Dear Diary

This week we have been learning how to write a diary entry. We looked at different diaries and as a class labelled each of the key features. We learnt that diaries have a date at the top of the page, begin with ‘Dear Diary’, are written in the first person past tense, include some descriptive vocabulary and end with ‘Love from’. We wrote diary entries as Beegu, describing her time on Earth. Next week we will making an information page about our planet Earth.

In maths we have been learning about subtraction. We have learnt how to count backwards and draw pictures to calculate how many are ‘left’.

In geography we have learnt about different landmarks around the world. We have loved seeing the photographs of the children at various places, please continue to send them in.

A huge well done to our school councillors Clemmie and Patricio for selling our salt dough decorations as part of the fundraiser for Shelter. Thank you for all of your donations, we will share the total raised with you next week.

This week we have been learning the following sounds:

igh (fly high)

i-e (nice smile)

Year One Blog- Science Museum Explorers

This week we had our school trip to the Science Museum where we explored the pattern pod, garden and space exhibition. The children loved seeing all of the items linked to space exploration of the past and future. Thank you to our parent helpers for accompanying us on the trip.

In English we have continued reading our text ‘Beegu’. We looked at different moments in the story and begun to think about Beegu’s motives and actions. Next week we will be writing a diary entry as Beegu.

In maths we have continued with comparing addition number sentences.

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

a-e (make a cake)

ay (may I play)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds:https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

Next Wednesday, our School Councillors will be selling Christmas decorations on the KS1 playground. The children made and decorated these decorations in class and all proceeds will go to the charity Shelter.

Years one and two, have started preparing for their Christmas Show ‘The Angel Who Nearly Missed It All’.

All of the children have taken home a letter describing what clothing is required for their costume, along with a copy of their line(s) to practise at home. If you have any questions  please come and speak to one of the KS1 team and we will be happy to help.

Next week it is the turn of the Roaring Rockets’ table for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂
