Merry Christmas Everyone!

Dear Parents and Carers

We have reached the end of our first term in Year 2, and the children have been brilliant. From the start of September right up to today, the children have worked hard, learnt a lot and most importantly, they have been very kind to each other in these very different times.

This week, the children enjoyed their Christmas Party. We finished our letters and posted them home, hopefully they have started to arrive already! Yesterday we all watched our Christmas Show which everyone should be able to watch through the school website.

Next term, we are starting our whole lot of history topic, starting with the Great Fire of London. We will be learning our Year 2 times tables and starting to read new, longer texts in guided reading and English lessons.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas, a very happy new year and the children all have a well earned rest! Finally, I just wanted to say a huge thank you from myself and Mrs Killy for the very generous Christmas gifts, it is very much appreciated.

Mr Stocking

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

This week we have continued learning about castles of the United Kingdom. We then made our own castle complete with turrets and arrow slits.

On Wednesday we enjoyed our KS1 Christmas party. It was great to see the children in their party outfits singing along to Christmas songs.

After the Christmas holidays we will be starting our new topic ‘Into the Woods’  where we will be learning about our local area and plants. In English our new core texts will be ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne and ‘Billy and the Beast’ by Nadia Shireen.

Mrs Sharon and I would like to say a huge thank you for your extremely generous Christmas gifts.  We hope you are able to have a rest and be with your loved ones during the break.

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

1 week to go!

Dear Parents and Carers

The children have had a very different week in school this week. We started the week with the children becoming actors and the teachers becoming directors as we filmed our Christmas show. Thank you for the fantastic costumes, all of the children looked excellent! The children were wonderful role models to the younger children in Year 1 and we are all very proud of them. Photos from the show will be uploaded to the blog next week.

For the rest of the week we have been preparing and writing our detailed letters to Father Christmas. The children will publish their letters on Monday and Tuesday and we will be walking to the post box on Wednesday to post them home. This is an excellent opportunity for you to see some of the lovely writing the children have been doing this term. If you haven’t already, please can you send in an addressed envelope with a stamp by Tuesday 15th December.

In maths, we have finished our learning for this term and are now consolidating all of our learning through practical activities and various number games. In RE, the children learnt about and created Christingles. Next week we will be finishing off the topics that we have been looking at in Geograpgy, RE, music and Science.

Next week we will also be having our Christmas party. This will take place on Wednesday 16th December. They must bring in their clothing in a named bag on Monday 14th December so that it is able to be left for 48 hours before our party on Wednesday. Due to COVID guidance, the children must bring in their own party food for them to eat by themselves. They can bring the food in a snack box and will have the opportunity to eat it in the afternoon. Please remember the food must not contain any traces of nuts, peanuts or seeds.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Stocking, Mrs Killy and Mrs Fenwick

You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch

This week we read the poem ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough .

We looked carefully at the poem and identified the ‘secret strings’ that held the poem together:

  • Includes sound words
  • The sound describes the object
  • Each new description is written on a new line
  • Each stanza is four lines long
  • The second and fourth line rhyme

We then wrote our own version of the poem where we described the sounds that The Grinch might steal at Christmas time.

This week we recorded our Christmas Show. We are looking forward to editing the scenes together and sharing the performance with you. The children have worked very hard to learn all of the songs and it was wonderful to see them perform their lines with such clarity and confidence.

On Wednesday 16th December it will be the KS1 Christmas party. The children must bring in their own party food in a snack/lunch box as we are unable to share food this year due to  COVID guidelines. The children are invited to change into a party outfit for the afternoon. Please can the children bring in their outfit on Monday 14th December in a named bag so that the items have enough time to be quarantined before the party.

On Thursday 17th December we would like to give the children the chance to make their own castle as part of a  D.T. project to consolidate our learning about castles of the UK. Please can the children bring in a cereal box on Monday 14th December which they will use to create their castle . This gives enough time that they can be left in quarantine  before we make the castles on Thursday morning.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Grumpy snowmen, Christmas letters and the start of advent!

Dear Parents and Carers,

The children have had a different week this week with extra show and singing practises in preparation for filming the show next week. The children have approached the show with excellent attitudes, fantastic acting and singing and have been wonderful role models throughout.

Spelling Shed this week continues to have 3 groups. All 3 groups will have a mini test next Friday. Please make sure the children are going on and checking their spellings, even if it is only a couple of games at a time. It really helps with their writing and enables us to talk about the sound they are learning in greater depth. One group is looking at the /n/ sound spelt kn and gn, one group is looking at the /j/ sound spelt -ge and one group is looking at the /ou/ sound.

This week in English the children have been preparing and planning to write a letter to Father Christmas. This letter is different to a normal letter to Santa, because the children won’t only be talking about what presents they would like, but will also include extra details about their Christmases, as well as ask Father Christmas a few questions that they have for him. After these are complete we want to have the children post the letters home, so that you can see an example of the excellent writing they have been doing this term. Could you please send in an addressed envelope with a stamp by Monday 14th December.

In Maths, we have finished money and started looking at multiplication and division which will continue through to the end of term. In topic, we have been looking at animals native to Australia. In RE, the children learnt about advent and created an advent calendar of kindness for our classroom. Next week the children will be learning more about the festivities of Christmas and thinking about how they celebrate the holiday. In Art, the children started creating grumpy snowmen for our show, and will finish these next week. In Science, the children learnt about the different stages of human life.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Stocking, Mrs Killy and Mrs Fenwick

We Are Poets

In English this week we have read the story ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers.

The children wrote shape poems describing the rocket used in the story. They also wrote a list poem describing the setting and boy’s emotions when he found himself stuck on the moon!

In maths the children have been learning to compare numbers and amounts using the mathematical symbols < > =.

On Monday the children enjoyed making Beegu’s favourite fruit salad. They enjoyed learning how to peel and chop all of the delicious fruit.

Next week we will be filming our performance of ‘The Most Disgruntled Snowman’. We are looking forward to sharing this performance with you.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

We are Writers

This week we’ve been busy in year one preparing to write our own version of the story ‘Beegu’. We used story maps to help sequence the events and on Thursday we wrote our own versions of this story. The children worked hard to include lots of descriptive language such as ‘eerie, tentatively, anxious, stern and cruel’. We were so impressed with the children’s fantastic stories and as a treat, we will be spending Monday afternoon making Beegu’s favourite snack; a tasty fruit salad with toppings!

In maths we have been learning how to partition a 2-digit number.  We used dienes to help us identify how many tens and how many ones were in each number.

We have started rehearsing for our Christmas performance of ‘The Most Disgruntled Snowman’. Last week the children took home a letter describing what clothing is required for their costume, along with a copy of their line to practise at home. An email was sent out to all parents explaining how this would be filmed and shared with you all.

Next week we will be starting our new class text ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers.

We will be using this text to write a shape poem and list poem. In maths we will be learning how to calculate one more and one less of a given number as well as using the mathematical symbols < > = to compare objects and amounts.

Next week we will start learning about the castles of the U.K. On Thursday 17th December we would like to give the children the chance to make their own castle as part of a  D.T. project. Please can the children bring in a cereal box on Monday 14th December which they will use to create their castle . This gives enough time that they can be left in quarantine  before we make the castles on Thursday morning.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂
