This week we have been learning how to reflect on and improve a piece of writing.

We each wrote a diary entry as Beegu and described the ‘strange and mysterious planet’. We were so impressed with the descriptive detail that the children included in their entries and how hard they all worked.

We then used our special pink pens to go back and edit our work looking for any missing capital letters and full stops.

In geography we learnt about the seven continents of earth and labelled them on a map for Beegu.

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and used hoops to sort the shapes based on their properties.

 

In phonics we have been learning about split digraphs and focused on the split a-e (make, cake, game, shape).

In handwriting we have focused on the letters s and q.

Next Monday it is the turn of the Dr Xargle table for Show and Tell (Kallum, Bella, Lily and Aaron).

The Year 1 Team

This week we met the alien Beegu who crash landed on earth.

We learnt about Beegu’s experiences on our planet and thought of questions she might ask herself about earth. Our word of the week was ‘anxious’ when we imagined that we were Beegu and generated adjectives to describe how she felt as she explored her new surroundings including:

‘Puzzled’ (Lily)

‘Ignored’ (Finn)

‘Worried’ (Cruz)

‘Frightened’ (Megan)

‘Confused’ (Harry)

‘Lonely’ (Sofia)

To help Beegu learn about our planet earth we also made an animal fact file for her, starting by identifying if an animal is a mammal, bird, fish, reptile or amphibian. We have learnt that not all birds can fly but they do have feathers, fish breathe using their gills and that we are a type of animal called a mammal.

In phonics we have learnt the sounds:

ou (shout, out, cloud, found)

ow (flower, cow, owl)

er (letter, better, river)

In handwriting we have practised the letters:

d and g.

Welcome to Willow Class.

We have loved our topic ‘Space’ and enjoyed learning about the ‘Space Race’ during the 1950s and 1960s.  Today we made information books about American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins landing on the moon.

This week we imagined that we had landed on a strange and mysterious planet. The children described the planet using their senses. We have been so impressed with how hard the children have been working on their writing and below are a few examples.

 

Congratulations to Ella and Harrison who were elected to be our School Councillors for this year.

 

If you have a chance over the half term please practise the children’s letter formation for handwriting and revise the following sounds for phonics: igh, ee, ai, oo, ch, sh, th, er and ar.

We hope you enjoyed our singing at the Harvest Festival and we wish you all a happy half term.

Last  week there was a bit of trouble happening down in Fairy Kingdom!

We got a letter explaining that the evil wizard had put a spell on Fairy Kingdom and taken all of their power and they needed our help getting it back.

The only way we could get the power back was by making a power potion for them! But there were a lot of very mystical ingredients.

 

After we had collected all the ingredients for the potion we mixed it in a beaker and left it for the fairies and elves …

 

When we got back to school there was a thank you letter waiting for us in the tadpole tank! We had done it! The fairies had got their power back, phew!

But we still don’t know what the key is for? Maybe we will find out soon.

We had all our equipment, we were ready to be animal detectives…

Mr Kern had kindly offered to come and help be our animal guide this morning so as we trudged down we asked him every animal question we could possibly think of.

We got into our groups and set off to see what we could find…

 

We saw lots of mole hills.

 

We found some poo and decided it must belong to a rabbit. Charlie crushed it up to see if he could work out what the rabbit had been eating.

 

 

 

Two frogs came to say hello. They were hiding in the damp leaves next to the pond.

 

     

One of the most exciting places to look was underneath logs. You have got to be quick though, before they all scamper away!

 

We had great adventures hunting for animals…

 

 but it was quite a tiring morning for some!

Spring Officially started on the 20th March, but we headed into the woods before then to see what signs of spring were already there!

We looked carefully at branches and saw that buds had started to grow.

Catkins hung from the trees, Ryan thought they looked like caterpillars.

We saw daffodils in lots of places. Seeing daffodils really brightened up our day! Sam and Theo even gave us a plant for the classroom. Thank you!

We got to Fishponds Wood quite early and found that dew was still on the ground. Eliza thought the dew made the grass sparkle.

We found many more signs of spring, I think our favourite was hearing the woodpecker tapping as we arrived at the woods. We couldn’t see it but we sure heard it! 

After our snack we each had a Spring poem that we had to share with the class. The sun shone so we all took off our coats as we performed the poems. It really did feel like spring was on its way!
