How to Make Cucumber Sandwiches

This week we have written a set of instructions to teach people how to make Bob’s favourite cucumber sandwiches. We have learnt that a good set of instructions will include:

  • Numbered steps
  • Bossy verbs
  • Pictures
  • Each step will be written on a new line

In maths we have been learning how to compare objects and amounts using the mathematical symbols: < > =

We have begun to learn how to partition a number into two parts to help practise the rapid recall of our number bonds to 10 and 20. We will continue this learning next week.

In science we have learnt about waterproof and absorbent materials. Bob needed our help designing a new suit. We tested a variety of materials to see if they if were absorbent or waterproof. In our conclusion, we decided that plastic or rubber would be the most appropriate material for Bob because these materials were waterproof and stronger than tinfoil.

This week we have been revising the sounds we have learnt so far in phonics. On the Spelling Shed there are lists for the children to practise the following sounds:

  • igh (fly high)
  • oa (goat in a boat)
  • ar (start the car)
  • ee (what can you see?)
  • ow (blow the snow and brown cow)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This week we have enjoyed learning about Lucy’s cuddly ‘Rose’, Jiyong’s keyring, Lenny’s toy car, Lilly’s puppy ‘Snowball’ and Ben’s holiday diary describing his adventures in Ireland and Spain. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Q Pootle 5’ table (Issa, Caitie, Grace, Theo, Jan and Gabriel).

In P.E we have been encouraging the children to get changed before the end of this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peTnXmZxuZQ

Please could you help your child practise fastening their buttons and tying their tie in a smart knot.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Have You Seen This Sneaky Alien?

This week Bob’s favourite was sandwich was stolen by a very sneaky alien.

To help Bob we wrote wanted posters describing the alien’s appearance and personality. Our amazing posters helped Bob capture the alien and reclaim his lunch. As a reward we learnt how to make his favourite cucumber sandwiches.

We enjoyed eating the sandwiches during our class picnic.

In maths we have been learning about counting forwards and backwards by completing a set of number sequences.

In science we have been learning about transparent and opaque materials. We have learnt that transparent materials let the light through so we can see through them. Opaque materials block the light which means we cannot see through them and this causes them to form a shadow. We then selected appropriate materials to make a shadow puppet.

In phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

ow- brown, cow

ow- blow, snow

As a school we have joined ‘The Spelling Shed’ to help children practise and learn their spellings. This week the children have all been given a username and password to help them access their spellings at home (please come and speak to one of the team if you cannot find your child’s username and password). The link to the Spelling Shed is below:

https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

The children enter their username and password to access their account.

Once signed into their account, the children can then access the various spellings that we are practising in class. The children can  work through the different levels to help them practise their spellings.

This week the children can practise the tricky words:

I

to

the

into

go

no

We hope you enjoy spelling at home!

This week in Show and Tell we enjoyed learning about Caroline’s cow bell from Switzerland, Eliza’s toy dog ‘Bonnie’, Valeri’s Pokemon ‘Psyduck’, Guy’s helicopter ‘Smashie’ Lewis’s model of the Sydney Opera House  and Ramir’s T-Rex. Next week it is the turn of the Dr Xargle table (Levi, Lenny, Lucy, Lilly, Ben and Jiyong).

Thank you to everyone who has brought in a photo of themselves reading in an unusual place. We look forward to seeing more photographs to use a part of our Reading Area display.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

A Strange and Mysterious Planet

This week we have been learning how to write a description of a setting. We looked at a strange planet called Pandora and thought of adjectives to describe what we could see. We then wrote these descriptions as sentences in our books.

In maths we have been learning how to use different resources to represent numbers. We wrote the number as a numeral, word and picture and then used our Base 10 Diene sticks to represent a 2 digit number.

In science we have continued learning about different materials and their properties. We helped Bob who needed some new items for his rocket. We told him which material would be best for a: chair, waterbottle, bookshelf and window by describing their properties.

This week the children took home their weekly reading books. The books will need to be returned on Tuesday so that the children can take home a new set on Wednesday.

In phonics we have been revising the sounds:

‘igh’ (flight, light, bright)

‘ar’ (car, star, far)

Attached is a website with a game for the children to play to revise some of the sounds they have learnt so far: http://www.ictgames.com/hybrid.html

To celebrate our love of reading we would like the children to bring in a photograph of them reading in an unusual place. These photographs will be used as part of our Reading Area display.

This week we enjoyed learning about Sean’s owl called ‘Tootie’, Albie’s velociraptor ‘Razor’, Matilda’s penguin ‘Fluffy’, Finn’s monkey from Go Ape and Marcus’s bike in Show and Tell. Next week it is the turn of the ‘Beegu’ table (Guy, Lewis, Caroline, Ramir, Valeri and Eliza).

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Meet Bob

This week we have started reading our core text ‘Bob Man on the Moon’.

We learnt about Bob’s day on the moon and all of the jobs he has to complete inside his rocket.  We then wrote a set of questions we would like to ask Bob, to find what it is like to visit the moon. We look forward to reading his replies next week.

In phonics we have learnt the sounds ‘ee’ (what can you see?) and ‘oa’ (goat in a boat). We have also been reviewing our phonics knowledge by playing the game ‘Obb and Bob’. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PicnicOnPluto.html

In maths we have been learning how to count and sort objects and numbers.  We sorted a variety of objects in different ways:

“We have sorted them into colours”

“We have sorted them into groups of three.”

We then used objects and numicon to represent a number:

We have begun to identify if a number is odd or even by singing our odd numbers song “Odd numbers it’s time to shine, they end in 1,3,5,7,9.”

In science we have started our topic ‘Materials’. We looked at different materials and began to describe their properties. We then sorted the materials using the vocabulary we had generated.

This week we wrote our class prayer:

Dear God,

Thank you for the world you have given us, our friends, families and school. We thank you for the love you give us every day.

Please help us to do our best and try our hardest in all we do.

We will always try to be kind to each other and love each other.

Amen

Congratulations to Toby who was awarded the Good Manners Cup in assembly. He has worked very hard this week and remembered to show good listening on the carpet as well as being helpful to the adults; well done Toby.

We enjoyed the Roaring Rocket’s Show and Tell items this week. George told us all about his wombat ‘Scruttle’,Toby showed the class his lovely alien picture and Nicky spoke about her space pictures.   Next week it is the turn of the ‘But Martin!’ table for Show and Tell (Marcus, Nicole S, Matilda, Finn, Albie and Sean).

Please remember to bring any empty yogurt pots for Miss Barnam’s exciting R.E lesson in two week’s time.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Welcome To Year One

What an exciting first week we’ve had in Year 1!

This week we have started our topic ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ where we will be learning about Earth and space. We talked about what we know about space and each child wrote one thing we would like to find out. Next week we will start learning about the Space Race between America and the USA.

We read the story ‘Alien’s Love Underpants’ and thought of adjectives to describe the cheeky aliens. We then wrote these adjectives as sentences in our brand new Year 1 Topic Books.

In maths we have been practising writing our numbers in our new Year 1 Maths Books, remembering to write the numbers inside the squares.

Miss Barnham will be teaching R.E to the children throughout the year. She has requested any spare yogurt pots and empty toilet rolls that you might have to donate, for a a very exciting R.E lesson in  two week’s time.

Next week we will be starting Show and Tell. In Year 1 each group will be given a turn for Show and Tell. They have the whole week to bring in an item that they would like to share with the class.  Next week it will be the turn of the Roaring Rockets table: Toby, Ranga, George, Eddie, Nicky and Elizabeth.

We look forward to seeing you next week for ‘Meet the Teacher’.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team

What’s the Time Mr Wolf?

This week we have been learning how to read and record time on an analogue clock. We each made a clock face to help us learn how to read o’clock, half past and quarter past the hour. We then recorded various times on an analogue clock face.

In science we have learnt how humans change and grow. Using our baby photos, we looked at how our bodies have changed and discussed what we couldn’t do as a baby and what we can do now. We then thought about how we will change when we grow into adults.

On Monday we will be celebrating our school’s French Day. The children need to come into school wearing the colours of the French flag: blue, white and red.  Please can the children bring a donation of £1.00.

Next Thursday we will be sending the children’s books home. Please can they come into school with a named plastic bag so that the children are able to carry their books home.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

How To Be A Lighthouse Keeper

This week Mr Grinling needed our assistance to help train a new lighthouse keeper. We have written a guide explaining what a lighthouse keeper does, described their uniform and written sentences detailing some of the jobs that you need to do as a lighthouse keeper.

In maths we have been learning about money. We have learnt to identify and explain the value of each coin. We have the investigated the different ways you can make a total.

On Monday we watched the School Council’s ‘Off By Heart’ poetry competition. Miti represented our class and read his poem beautifully for the audience. Well done to the Year Two children who were the overall winners.

On Friday afternoon we received some exciting post! It was a letter from Prince Charles thanking the children for their letters detailing the plastic pollution facing our oceans.

As the letters arrived Friday during going up time, we will hand the letters out on Monday.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Today Was The Most Catastrophic Day!

This week we have  been busy bees! On Monday the children wrote their diary entry as Mr Grinling describing the catastrophic day when he locked Hamish in the lighthouse. We were so impressed by the descriptive details the children included in their writing.

In maths this week we have been reviewing our learning by completing our termly maths assessments. These are a way to review our learning and help us get ready for Year Two.

In science we have been learning how animals produce offspring that grow into adults. We have looked at various animals and drawn a life cycle of a butterfly. Below is an example of the children’s work by Lily D.

Over the next two weeks we will be looking at how humans grow and change. Please could the children bring in a photograph of them as a baby or toddler to share with the class.

Congratulations to Miti who has been chosen to represent our class in the School Council poetry competition on Monday. He will be performing the poem ‘Nobody Loves Me’. Well done Miti.

Please note that next week will be the last week we will be sending out books.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Catastophe!

This week we have read the story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Catastrophe’ where poor Mr Grinling loses the key to the lighthouse. We have sequenced the key events of the story and next week we will be writing a diary entry as Mr Grinling recounting the day.

In maths we have been reviewing partitioning by identifying the place value of each digit in a number including zero. We have then developed our reasoning skills by solving worded problems.

This week we have started getting ready for Sport’s Day by practising the different events.

In R.E we have been learning about symbolism in the Jewish faith. Miss Barnham showed the class various objects that are important to the Jewish faith and the children learnt about their symbolism.

The School Councillors are organising an ‘off by heart’ poetry competition which will take place on Monday 2nd July. The children have been given  two poems to choose from which they can practise at home. The two poems the children can choose from are:

I Think I’ll Go and Eat Worms

Nobody loves me,

Everybody hates me,

I think I’ll go and eat worms.

Great big fat ones,

Long thin skinny ones,

And the gravy goes

SLURP, SLURP, SLURP, SLURP.

or

Witch, Witch

“Witch, witch, where do you fly?”                                                                                         “Under the clouds and over the sky.”

“Witch, witch, what do you eat?”                                                                                           “Little, black apples from Hurricane Street.”

“Witch, witch, what do you drink?”                                                                                     “Vinegar, blacking and good red ink.”

“Witch, witch, where do you sleep?”                                                                                    “Up in the clouds where pillows are cheap.”

On Monday 25th June we will be performing these poems in class, with one child (or pair if the children have decided to perform it as a pair) being chosen to perform it in the competition.

It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Alex Merriman, our Chair of Governors. Mother Helen spoke to the children this morning in assembly where we read a prayer for Alex and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody during this terribly sad time.

We hope you all have a good weekend,

The Year One Team

“Down There Under The Sea”

We hope you enjoyed the children’s assembly all about the seaside. The facts about the animals were taken from the children’s work as were the descriptions about the sounds at the seaside. The children have worked really hard to remember all of the songs and poems and should feel extremely proud about how clearly and confidently they spoke.

This week we have written our set of instructions to teach Mr Grinling how to make the seaside salsa. We then followed our set of instructions and made the salsa in class. We enjoyed eating it!

In maths we have been revising place value and have looked at the different ways we can represent numbers. We will be continuing with this learning next week.

Next week it is the turn of the jellyfish table for Show and Tell (Benedict, Megan, Lily V and Erin).

We hope to see lots of you at the Summer Fair.

Have a great weekend,

The Year One Team
