Garden and Animal Explorers

Last week we enjoyed our visit to Kew Gardens. We went on a picture treasure hunt where we explored the gardens and then had lots of fun in the Children’s Garden.

This week we were very lucky when we got to meet and learn about some farm animals. Thank you to Miss Cronin for organising this lovely visit.

During our Victorian workshop in June we learnt the story ‘How the Ice-Cream Got its Cone’. This week we retold the story in our English Books.

In phonics we have been reviewing the sounds we have learnt this year.

There are words containing a variety of sounds for the children to practise reading and spelling available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

A Dip for Mr Grinling

This week we have written our set of instructions to teach Mr Grinling how to make the dip tzatziki.

We then followed our set of instructions and made the dip in class.

We enjoyed eating it!

In maths we have been partitioning and comparing numbers. Next week we will be continuing place value and finding one more and one less of a number within 100.

This week the children performed their first ever class assembly to Year Two, Mrs Warner and Mr Quinn. The children spoke with great clarity and performed their songs beautifully. Mr Quinn was so impressed with all of the facts they shared. We will be sharing a recording of the assembly with you next week.

In phonics we have been reviewing the following sounds:

er (better letter)

u-e (huge brute)

Meeting Mr Grinling

This week we started our new class text ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’.

In the story we met an industrious lighthouse keeper called ‘Mr Grinling’ whose lunch kept being stolen by some pesky seagulls. We learnt about the jobs Mr Grinling had to do and wrote an explanation text explaining how to be a lighthouse keeper.

In maths we have been  learning how to order and partition numbers within 100. We used dienes to show how many tens and ones were in a 2 digit number.

In science we have started our new topic ‘Materials’. We sorted materials into a Venn diagram.

In R.E we have started our new unit’ What Responsibility has God Given us to Look after the Earth?’. In class we read the Creation Story and wrote down parts of the story we found puzzling. We then walked to St Matthew’s Church where Mother Helen and Father Alistair showed us the parts of the church and answered our questions.

First Week Back

This week we took part in our Victorian Seaside workshop. During the workshop we met a lady called Victoria who taught us lots of information about the Victorian era. We learnt that the beaches used to be separated for men and women. This was because women used to wear longer bathing costumes as it was seen rude to show anything other than your hands, feet and face.

In phonics we have been reviewing the following sounds:

ar (start the car)

ir (whirl and twirl)

ay (may I play?)

ai (snail in the rain)

a-e (make a cake)

A Plastic Problem

This week we have been learning about plastic pollution in our oceans.

Did you know that scientists predict there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050 if we don’t do something soon? In Willow Class we felt that this is something we need to change.

We designed persuasive posters to explain to people what is happening and how people can help. Next week we will be writing a letter to Mr Quinn informing him about how we can be a plastic smart school.

This week in maths we have been learning about fractions. We have learnt that fractions means pieces and that the bottom number (denominator) tells you how many pieces to make. We used playdough and counters to help us make half of a shape and an amount. Next week we will be moving on to quarters.

In art we have made a beautiful clay pot with a shell print. Next week we will be painting our clay pots to bring home.

In phonics we have been reviewing the following sounds:

Poetry and Division

In class we read the book ‘Flotsam’ by David Wiesner. In the story a young boy finds an old camera discarded on the beach. He decides to develop the photographs and when he looks at them he realises that the camera has taken photographs of magical underwater worlds.

Using the book as inspiration we wrote poems describing animals’ movements and sounds.  Next week we will be learning about the plastic problem facing our oceans.

In maths we have been learning how to divide amounts. We have learnt that division means sharing. Using counters and pictures we have learnt how to solve division equations such as 18 divided by 2.  Next week we will be learning about doubling, halving and finding a quarter.

We are Writers

In English this week the children have been writing their own version of Where the Wild Things Are. They drew story maps to help them sequence the events and verbally told the story to their partner. As a class we then created a word bank of effective vocabulary for the children to include in their retells such as ‘mischief, tamed, terrorised,  waves as big as mountains’. We were so impressed with how hard the children worked, their stories were fantastic.

In maths the children have continued learning about co-ordinates and completed their termly assessments.

In phonics the children have reviewed the following sounds:

  • i-e
  • igh
  • a-e
  • oa
  • ow
  • o-e

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.edshed.co/login

You should also have access to Maths Shed through your child’s login details. Please let us know if you are unable to access either of these.

In art the children enjoyed making their fantastic rain-forest dioramas. Here are the final products:

Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend our virtual Parents Evening this week. Below are the comprehension questions that I had discussed in the meeting, along with the handwriting sheets:

  • An introduction
  • Information that is grouped
  • Picture with a caption

Here are some examples of the children’s work:

Next week on Thursday 25th March the children will be creating a rain-forest diorama for an art project. On Monday 22nd March, please could the children bring in a small box (preferably a shoe box) to use to complete this project. This is to ensure the boxes have enough time to quarantine before being used. Some examples are below:

Thank you so much for our beautiful flowers, it made our day! It was so kind and thoughtful of you.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂
