Dear Parents/Carers

This week we have been learning about pictograms in maths. We learnt how to read pictograms and also had a go at creating our own. We also continued to deepen our understanding of division using sharing and grouping.

In english we have Vlad and the Great Fire of London. This week we made story maps and then re-told the story using our maps. We revised statement, command, exclamation and question sentences. We focused on formulating questions about statements we read as well as asked questions about funny pictures.

In science, we are talking about changes as part of our topic on Animals, including humans. We brought science to life – acting out the lifecycle of a frog. The four stages 1. Frogspawn 2. Tadpole 3. Froglet and 4. Adult Frog. We have also talked about the human and butterfly lifecycle in previous lessons.

Today was crazy hair day! We had lots of fun and looked great! We would like to thank everyone for contributing and making a donation.

Have a great weekend

Dear parents and caregivers

We have had a super start to the Spring term. We have been doing many interesting things.

In maths, we have been learning about multiplication and division and the relationship between them. We have been learning our 2, 5, and 10 times tables and will continue to revise them.

In topic this term, we are learning about The Great Fire of London.

In English, we have been reading The Great Fire, City In Flames. This is linked to topic. We are looking forward to reading chapter 3 next week.

Please remember that there are new spelling lists put up weekly on Spelling Shed. This week our focus was on adding ‘-er’ and ‘-est’ to the end of words which end in y. The y is changed to an i then add ‘-er’ or ‘-est’ eg. happy will become happier and happiest.

Below is the login

It is important that students spend at least 5 minutes a day revising spelling rules. We are able to see who has been using Spelling Shed – it really does make all the difference.

Our class loves science! This week we had lots of fun being curious about how our bodies are effected by exercise. We measured our pulse after doing various exercises (walking, jogging and running) and observed how our pulse changed. We also discussed what parts of the body we used and how we felt after exercising.

Have a great weekend

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Thank you so much for your support this term. It has been a wonderful beginning to what we feel will be an excellent year ahead (as we move into 2022).

We have now recorded the children’s performance of ‘The Little Angel Who Nearly Missed It All’. It will be shared with you digitally.

We are astounded by your generosity towards the teachers. Thank you very much for your thoughtful gifts.

We hope that you enjoy a well-deserved celebration with family.

Happy holidays!

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Only ONE more week to go!

This week we have been reading a variety of Christmas stories and enjoyed ourselves doing all sorts of festive activities.

On Tuesday morning, we performed songs from our Christmas Show.  It was wonderful to see you there (despite the cold!) and share in the festive spirit. Next week, we will record the full performance of our show and share it with you digitally.

In Maths, we used our learning about money to create a shop. We had a bakery, a fruit and vegetable shop, toy shop and even a TESCO. We each made a shopping list and a money purse. We practised exchanging money for goods – it helped us learn a lot and was also fun!

In Science, we learnt about healthy eating and made a healthy eating plate. We used our knowledge to plan and make a healthy snack for Santa’s reindeers. Best of all, we got to taste test the finished product. 🙂

On Wednesday 15th December, it will be the KS1 Christmas party. The children must bring in their own party food in a snack/lunch box as we are unable to share food this year due to COVID guidelines. The children are invited to change into a party outfit for the afternoon. Please can the children bring in their outfit on Wednesday 15th December in a named bag.

Have a wonderful weekend

Dear Parents/Carers

We had a very successful MUFTI day on Thursday. Thank you to all for your kind donations.

For Spelling Shed this week the children are focusing on the /l/ or /ul/ sound spelled –el. Challenge words are up again so the students may continue to practise.

In maths this week, the children have deepened their understanding of subtraction using the column method. We have used dienes to practise exchanging.

In English, we have begun guided reading after reading The Green Ship. Guided reading teaches children to better understand text through teaching a series of comprehension strategies.

Year 2 will now be working hard in the lead up to our Christmas show. Can the children please continue to practise their lines at home. Each child should have taken home a copy of their lines along with their costume letter. All costumes need to be in the week of the 29th November. If you have any difficulties in finding the items for your costume, please come and speak to one of the KS1 team.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Dear Parents/Carers

This week has been a very busy week! We made a wonderful class wreath of poppies for Remembrance Day, baked some delicious Challah in R.E and created beautiful fireworks artwork.

On Thursday, we had a very special school Mass to celebrate Remembrance Day. The children were interested and respectful when learning about this special occasion.

In maths this week we continued our learning about subtracting a 2-digit number from a 2-digit number. We have done subtraction without exchange and have started to look at exchanging. In English, we planned and then wrote an information report about Remembrance Day.

At St Matthew’s we are attempting to become as paperless as we can and because of this the spellings are no longer sent out on paper. However, for whatever reason, if you need a paper copy, please let me know and I am happy to prepare this. This week we have another round of challenge words (these will be left up for 4 weeks) and the /l/ or /ul/ sound spelled ’-le’ at the end of words.

Looking to next week, Year 2 have a MUFTI Day on Thursday 18th November. Can the children please bring in a donation if they choose to wear their own clothing. This donation will go towards the charity Shelter.

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope you have had a restful half term. The children have shared some of their half term break highlights with us and it sounds like lots of fun was had.

Spelling Shed is back this week with two lists. This week we have words ending in –ed and homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings). We are encouraging the children to spend at least 5 minutes a day engaging with Spelling Shed.

In maths this week, we have continued column addition and also dived into subtraction. The children have learnt about a variety of different methods we could use when solving a problem.

In English, we read the Green Ship. It is a wonderful book written and illustrated by Quentin Blake. This book will be used for Guided Reading this term. We also looked at adverbs and practised using them with verbs in a sentence. Next week we will read Journey. Our new topic will be focused around this book and the children will be exploring different journeys.

In Science, we started to look at Animals Including Humans. The children have reflected on their knowledge so far.

This half term we will be learning and rehearsing our Christmas production. The children in Year 2 will be doing the acting parts. This week we have started to learn the first few songs of the productions.

We hope you have a lovely half term,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville

Year Two Blog Friday 8th October 2021

This week we planned and wrote our newspaper reports about the Lonely Beast.  We made sure to include a catchy headline, subheading, key information and a picture to match the information.

In maths we have been continuing addition and subtraction, focusing on our number bonds to 100.

In science we performed an experiment to test the suitability of different materials to make an umbrella. We each chose the materials we thought would be best, predicted what we thought might happen and then tested the materials to see if our predictions were correct.

Next Thursday your child can take home their books from their time in Year One. Please can your child bring in a sturdy, named bag ready to go.

Congratulations to Izzy and Oscar who have been elected as our School Councillors and to Bobby and Senara who will continue as our Faith Champions.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville 🙂

Year Two Blog

This week in maths we have been continuing to learn about the place value of numbers within 100. We have begun to learn about addition and subtraction and the relationship between the two operations. For example:

If 8 + 2 = 10, 10 – 2 = 8.

In science  we have continued to look at everyday materials and this week we conducted an experiment to see if materials change by bending, twisting, stretching and squashing. We put some materials in water to see what would happen and begun to predict what would happen to materials when heated.

In English we have been learning about the features of a newspaper report. We read some First News to show us what a good one looks like. Then began planning our own newspaper report about the Lonely Beast.

On Spelling Shed this week, the children can practise spelling common exception words (challenge words) and words containing ‘-ge’ (change, strange, range).

The children  really enjoyed out door P.E  (before the rain came).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville 🙂
