Year Two Blog 8th November

This week’s blog is written by Ben Grogan and Caitie Thompson.

“This week, we have been learning how to count money in maths. We made different amounts and we learnt about pence first, then pounds.

In English we have been reading the books Esio Trot and Journey. Esio Trot is for our guided reading and Journey is for our writing. We have been learning how to write noun phrases such as ‘twisted trees’ and ‘shimmering river’.

In science we have been learning about the different features of animals. We have looked at each of the animal’s features and said what is the same and what is different. My favourite animal is a reptile because it sheds its skin as it gets bigger (Ben). My favourite animal is a chameleon because they change colour (Caitie). We have also put the animals into groups and we learnt that we are mammals.

Today we have art and we are making poppies for Remembrance Day. ”

Dear Parents/Carers

After a break during half term, Spelling Shed is back with two lists again. Some children will be having challenge words with no set rule. Other children will be learning the /l/ sound spelt ll. For Maths shed I have set 2 digit addition to help the children consolidate their knowledge of addition whilst we look at other concepts in class.

In maths this week, we have started looking at money. The children have learnt about the different coins and notes, as well as counting in pence, pounds and pounds and pence together. We also started to learn about selecting different values of money to make one value. Next week we will be turning the classroom into a shop to better understand using money. In English, we published our information pages and started our new book Journey. This term our topic will be focused around this book and the children will be exploring different journeys. We have now finished learning about the Isle of Wight, and will now be comparing it to Australia.

In R.E. this week, we created our Jewish Sukkahs. Thank you for all of the empty cereal boxes that were brought in, it was a huge help. In Science we will be starting to look at animals next week.

This half term we will be learning and rehearsing our Christmas production. The children in Year 2 will be doing the acting parts. The children have been told what parts they have and will be given their lines next week. This week we have started to learn the first few songs of the productions.

Looking to next week, we will be writing our own stories based on Journey, starting our new R.E. topic, the Lord’s Prayer, and comparing features of Australia and the Isle of Wight.

The winner of our star of the week this week is Lily, congratulations!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Isle of Wight Fact Finders

Dear Parents/Carers

Spelling Shed continues to have high engagement and this is reflected in good results in our weekly spelling test. This week there are two spellings lists. The children will only be able to access their lists on Spelling Shed and will take home the appropriate paper resource. The children can freely access all of the resources on Maths shed this week.

In maths this week, we have been learning how to add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers to and from a 2 digit number. We have been focusing on how to exchange and when it is needed in addition and subtraction. The children are now adept at using the column method to solve harder mathematical equations. In English, the children have been starting to look at information pages. We will be writing an information page about the Isle of Wight for the Lonely beast. The children are excited about telling the Lonely beast about dinosaur fossils, attractions and different features of the Isle of Wight.

In R.E. this week we learnt about the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Next week we will be making our own Sukkahs. If you have any spare empty cereal boxes, could you please send them in with your child.

This Wednesday we had our key stage 1 trip to the Primary Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. It was a great success and the children had a lovely time listening to some fantastic music. All of the performers were of ages between 9 and 19, and after the performances I had several children say how they would love to do something like that when they are older!

Looking to next week, we will be finishing our topic of addition and subtraction by consolidating our knowledge of written methods, especially column subtraction, as well as writing our information pages.

The winner of our star of the week this week is Lucy, congratulations!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Riddle Me This…

Dear Parents/Carers

Spelling Shed continues to have high engagement and this is reflected in good results in our weekly spelling test. The spellings this week is the /s/ sound spelt as a ‘c’ before i, e or y. All of the children will be having the same spellings until half term. For Maths Shed I have set the children adding and subtracting number bonds to 20.

In maths this week, the children have been learning how to find 1 and 10 more or less and today we moved our learning onto adding and subtracting multiples of 10 from a 2 digit number. The children know the golden rule when adding or subtracting multiples of 10 is that the ones never change. In English, we started the week by publishing our Newspapers. We then moved onto writing our own riddles about different animals from around the world. The children produced some lovely descriptive writing and wrote excellent riddles.

In topic this week, we learnt about the human and physical features by sorting them. The children have been very engaged when learning about the Isle of Wight.. In Science we investigated how different materials can and cannot change shape. The children explored a variety of materials, including playdough, cork and sponge. In Guided Reading, we have been learning how to use our inference skills when looking at pictures to discover what the story is trying to tell us. We did this with two books: The heart and the bottle, and The Gorilla. We also designed our Christmas cards this week, that will be available to buy at some point in the future.

Looking to next week, we will be learning how to exchange with simple addition and subtraction; writing information pages and making and adding to maps of the Isle of Wight.

The winner of our star of the week this week is Finn, congratulations!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Extra, Extra, Read All About It

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we have been writing newspaper reports to help the Lonely Beast find other beasts from around the world. We have learnt that there are some budding reporters in Elder Class.

In maths we have started learning about addition and subtraction. We have revised our knowledge of number facts and implemented this understanding in our calculations.

In science we have been investigating the suitability of various materials, discussing why Mr Stocking wouldn’t want a chocolate teapot for example.

In geography we have been researching facts about the Isle of Wight and the children used I-Pads for their investigative work. We were excited to learn that the Isle of Wight is one of the best places in Europe to find dinosaur fossils.

In R.E we have continued learning about Judaism and this week the children learnt about special artefacts in the Jewish faith.

Congratulations to Sean and Grace who have been elected as our School Councillors.  Well done to Toby, who has been our Star of the Week and will be taking home Freddy. Make sure you give him some bananas Toby!

For all the spelling bees out there, new spellings will ‘bee’ arriving on Monday.

Hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year Two Team

Welcome to Year Two

Year Two News:

Spelling Shed last week was a big success with lots of the children engaging with the program at home and filling out their spelling sheets. This week the children will be learning the /j/ sound, but this time spelt –ge at the end of words, i.e age. From next week we will have different spelling groups so each child is appropriately challenged. I have set the children a multiplication activity on Maths Shed to coincide with our learning on counting in 2s,  5s and 10s.

In maths this week, we have been learning how to order numbers and objects, as well as how to count in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s. Today we had a small place value assessment to end the block of learning. Next week we are starting our new block – addition and subtraction. We are starting by looking at addition and subtraction facts. In English, we wrote and published our diary entries. The children all did really well at getting into character of the Lonely Beast and we had lots of fantastic pieces of writing. Next week we are looking at writing newspaper articles.

In topic this week, we looked at the countries and flags of the U.K. The children learnt about the capital cities of each country and can now place them all on a map. In R.E. we held our own Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, with card making and food tasting. Lots of the children enjoyed the apples with honey we had. In Science, we explored the different materials around the classroom and discussed their varying properties. In Guided Reading we continued reading the Green ship and started with simple comprehension questions based on what we had read.

Looking to next week, we will be choosing our School Council representative for Year 2. We will be exploring the suitability of different materials in science, drawing Jewish artefacts in R.E. and in Topic we will be researching facts about the Isle of Wight using Ipads.

The winner of our star of the week this week is Grace, well done.
