A Plastic Problem

This week we have been learning about plastic pollution in our oceans.

Did you know that scientists predict there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050 if we don’t do something soon? In Willow Class we felt that this is something we need to change.

We designed persuasive posters to explain to people what is happening and how people can help. Next week we will be writing a formal letter to tell people how to reduce our plastic waste.

In maths we have been learning how to double numbers. We have learnt that double 6 is the same as 6 + 6 or 6 x 2. We drew pictures to help us solve the equation and some of us began to use our knowledge of partitioning to help us double two-digit numbers.

E.g. Double 24:

Double 20 = 40

Double 4 = 8

40 + 8 = 48

Last week we were able to visit the Year 4 and 5 Science Fair. We enjoyed participating in lots of experiments and learning about gravity, friction and magnetism. Thank you to Mr Peck for organising such a fun afternoon.

Next week it is the turn of the killer whale table for Show and Tell (Nelson, Matilda, Lucas, Shinjiro and Finn).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team

We Are Explorers

This week we enjoyed our trip to the Natural History Museum. The rainy weather cleared away which allowed us to explore the garden in the bright sunshine. We used our special explorer packs to help us search for mini-beasts and different plant life. After learning about the various animals and their habitats, we then explored the museum.

In English we wrote our newspaper reports describing the day the whale got stuck on the beach. We are going to edit these reports and publish them for our topic books.

In maths we have been learning how to sort amounts into equal groups. Next week we will continue this, as we learn how to divide numbers.

Next week it is the turn of the crab table for Show and Tell (Ella, Kallum, Leon, Cruz and Isabella).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

This week we have been learning about newspaper reports. On Monday we looked at various newspaper articles and identified the key features.

We then started to plan our newspaper report to explain what happened to the whale in our book ‘The Snail and the Whale’ .

Next week we will be writing these reports ensuring to include a snappy headline and key vocabulary.

In maths we have been continuing to learn about multiplication. We drew arrays to solve an equation and developed our problem and reasoning skills by solving worded problems.

This week the children completed their Lenten Project by participating in a set of skills based circuits. Well done Willow Class!

Next week we will be visiting the Natural History Museum as part of our science learning about animals including humans.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team.

Sunshine At Last

Welcome back to a very sunny Summer Term.

We have started our new topic ‘By The Sea’ and our core text this half term is ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson. This week we learnt lots of facts about humpback whales and made an information poster. Did you know that humpback whales can grow up to 16 metres long? We then organised our facts by generating ideas for different sub-headings to use in our information pages.

In grammar we have learnt about the spelling rule for adding s or es to make a plural. We learnt that if the word ends in ch, sh, x or z we add ‘es’, if it doesn’t end in ch, sh, x or z we add ‘s’.

In maths we have been learning how to multiply two numbers together. First we used the language of ‘lots of’ For example: 3 X 5 is the same as 3 lots of 5.

We then begun to explore using arrays to represent a multiplication equation.

In history we have started to learn about seasides in the past by looking at photographs of beaches during the Victorian era. We studied the photographs carefully and wrote sentences to explain what we have found out and what we would like to find out.

This week we thought of  new group names for our tables. After voting, the winning five tables were:

  • Jellyfishes
  • Sharks
  • Killer Whales
  • Merpeople
  • Crabs

Next week it is the turn of the shark table for Show and Tell (Aaron, Edward, Sofia, Bella and Lily D).

We hope you all had a lovely break,

The Year One Team

Pond Explorers

This week we explored the pond wildlife at Fishpond’s Wood. We observed the different plants that grew there as well as the animals that live both in and along the water’s edge. We got very excited when we spotted a family of ducks hiding in the bushes.

Busy Bees!

This week in science we have been learning how bees carry pollen from one plant to another. We have learnt how plants are attracted to the bright petals and scent of a plant when they land on a flower to drink the nectar. We made our own flowers, and used sugar to represent the pollen of the plant. When our bees flew onto our flower we noticed how some of the ‘pollen’ had stuck to the bees.

In English this week we have been writing our own version of Where the Wild Things Are. We drew story maps to help us sequence the events and verbally told the story to our partner. As a class we then created a word bank of effective vocabulary we wanted to include in our retells. Please come and read our stories as we’re really proud of them!

In maths this week we have been completing our termly assessments to consolidate all of our learning.

Next week it will be our last session at Fishpond’s Wood. For part of the session we will be exploring the pond, please ensure the children bring their wellies to school.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Fascinating Facts!

This week we have been continuing to learn lots of fascinating facts about rain-forests. Did you know that algae grows on a sloth’s back? This helps them camouflage in trees to help hide from predators such as snakes and jaguars.  wrote our own information pages about rain-forests. To show our learning we write information pages all about rain-forests. We organised and grouped our information into paragraphs and worked hard to include clear and concise facts. Below are a few examples of our amazing work:

In maths we have been continuing to learn about measurements. We have estimate and weighed the mass of different objects in both cubes and g and KG. We then used the mathematical symbols < > and = to compare their weight.

On Tuesday we visited Fishpond’s Wood to continue learning about our local area. We used IPads to take photographs of the key features of the woods. While exploring we rather enjoyed pretending to be sloths in trees!

Deep Down in the Woods

This week we have been focusing on the setting of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and have been learning all about rainforests.  We have begun to organise our information ready to write an information page next week. We now know lots of facts about rainforests, for example did you know that rainforests are called the ‘Earth’s lungs’? This is because they give us so much oxygen.  Try quizzing us on our rainforest facts!

On Tuesday we had our first trip to Fishpond’s Wood. We explored the physical features of our local environment and used crayons to make rubbings of the different trees. This helped us learn about the various patterns and textures. We also made careful sketches of various plants focusing carefully on their shape and colours.  After that, we used nature to make our own artistic creation. Like the artist Andy Goldworthy, we collected various twigs, leaves and flowers to make something artistic from nature.

This week we have continued our core text ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. We wrote information pages telling readers how to spot a wild thing. We described their appearance, habitat, characteristics and diet.

In maths this week we have continued measuring the length and height of different objects using our hands and cubes. We have started using standard units of measurement by using meter sticks and rulers to explore cm and M. We will continue this next week.

On Thursday we celebrated ‘World Book Day’ and dressed up as our favourite characters from different stories. To celebrate the day we participated in a whole school parade to showcase our amazing outfits and joined Year 2 for a KS1 Where’s Wally hunt. Thank you for your donations towards the Book Aid Trust. In the assembly the children learnt about how their donations help bring books to children around the world.

Meeting the Wild Things

This week we have started our new core text ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.

In phonics we have been reviewing the following sounds:

ee (teeth, feet, meet, queet, zeep)

ea (tea, sea, leap, cheap, queax, beath)

e-e (eve, steve, meve, peme)

On the website below there are a range of games to play with the children to help practise their sounds.

In maths we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have also begun measuring the length of different objects which we will continue next week.

Next Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day. The children are invited to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. They can also bring in a copy of the book to share with the class. We look forward to seeing all of the different story characters.

Next week it is the turn of the Goldilocks’ table for Show and Tell (Harry, Benedict, Lily D, Bella and Erin).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team
