A Very Tasty Lunch!

In D.T we have been learning about dips and dippers from different countries. We tasted and then described the texture of: tzatziki, hummus and guacamole. Not everyone was a fan of how they tasted!

Next week we are going to write a set of instructions for Mr Grinling to teach him how to make one of the dips, so that he can include it in his lunchbox.

In maths we have been learning about position and direction. We have used the language of ‘left, right, quarter turn and half turn’ when describing the direction of an object. Next week we will be creating a class map and using co-ordinates to locate the position of an object.

In science we have been learning about our five senses. We took part in a ‘senses carousel’ to understand how our senses help us survive and learnt which sense is associated with which body part.

The School Councillors are organising an ‘off by heart’ recital which will take place on Tuesday 2nd July. Tomorrow the children will be given two poems to choose from which they can practise at home. The two poems the children can choose from are:

PLEAS-E by June Crebin

Bumble bee, bumble bee,

Fly away home;

Leave my naked toes

Alone!

Bumble bee, bumble bee,

Don’t you know

Another place

Where you can go?

Bumble bee, bumble bee,

When I doze off,

I don’t need you,

So buzz off!

or

Soggy Greens by John Cunliffe

Oh, soggy greens I hate you,

I hate your sloppy slush;

And if my mum would let me,

I’d throw you in a bush.

Oh, apple pie I love you

I love your crunchy crust;

And if my mum would let me,

I’d eat you till I bust.

On Thursday 27th June we will be performing these poems in class, with one child being chosen to perform it in the competition.

This week we have learnt about Levi’s Pokemon cards, Issa’s Pokemon handbook, George’s penguin, Gabriel’s cuddly beat bug and Guy’s cuddly bear. Next week it is the turn of the merpeople table for Show and Tell (Albie, Ranga, Nicole Lee, Coco, Grace and Sean).

On World Book Day this year, the children were invited to participate in an illustration project. All of the children learnt the story of ‘Surf and Turf’ and helped create the images for the book. The book has now been completed and is ready for printing at the cost of £6.00. All proceeds of the book will be donated to Book Aid International which is a charity that buys books for libraries in other countries where children have little chance of having access to books. More information about the work of the charity can be found on the Book Aid website. If you would like to order a copy of the book, please complete the order form attached, along with the payment in cash only, in a named envelope and return to the Year One classroom by Monday 24th June.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team
