Year One Blog: Meeting the Wild Things

This week we have started our new core text ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak.

We generated adjectives to describe the appearance and characteristics of the Wild Things and used plasticine to create our own character for the story. Here are our terrifying Wild Things:

In maths we have been measuring objects using non-standard units of measurement. We will be continuing with measuring next week.

This week we started learning about rainforests. On Friday we were joined by Freya’s mum who taught us lots about life in a rainforest. We found out about the different animals, the four layers and the deforestation for palm oil. It was extremely informative and the children loved hearing about the different animals. A huge thank you to Freya’s mum.

This week we started our D.T project to design and make a story puppet. The children have designed their puppets and selected the materials and equipment they will need. We will be making our puppets next Friday.

This week’s book recommendation is written by Lizzie:

“I am recommending the book ‘Polly Parrot Picks a Pirate’.

I enjoyed this book because it was really funny and the pirates are a bit silly. Even though he’s a pirate, one of them is afraid of a little spider. Polly who is a parrot uses perseverance in the story because when trying to find a pirate for a pet she has to keep trying again and again. I found it very funny.”

Next Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day. The children are invited to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. They can also bring in a copy of the book to share with the class. If the children choose to come into school dressed as a character, we are asking them to provide a £1.00 donation to go towards the charity Book Aid. We look forward to seeing all of the different story characters.

Next week it is the turn of Theo, Freya, Emily, Georgia and Jamie for Show and Tell.

We hope you have restful weekend,

The Year One Team
