A Very Tasty Lunch!

In D.T we have been learning about dips and dippers from different countries. We tasted and then described the texture of: tzatziki, hummus and guacamole. Not everyone was a fan of how they tasted!

Next week we are going to write a set of instructions for Mr Grinling to teach him how to make one of the dips, so that he can include it in his lunchbox.

In maths we have been learning about position and direction. We have used the language of ‘left, right, quarter turn and half turn’ when describing the direction of an object. Next week we will be creating a class map and using co-ordinates to locate the position of an object.

In science we have been learning about our five senses. We took part in a ‘senses carousel’ to understand how our senses help us survive and learnt which sense is associated with which body part.

The School Councillors are organising an ‘off by heart’ recital which will take place on Tuesday 2nd July. Tomorrow the children will be given two poems to choose from which they can practise at home. The two poems the children can choose from are:

PLEAS-E by June Crebin

Bumble bee, bumble bee,

Fly away home;

Leave my naked toes

Alone!

Bumble bee, bumble bee,

Don’t you know

Another place

Where you can go?

Bumble bee, bumble bee,

When I doze off,

I don’t need you,

So buzz off!

or

Soggy Greens by John Cunliffe

Oh, soggy greens I hate you,

I hate your sloppy slush;

And if my mum would let me,

I’d throw you in a bush.

Oh, apple pie I love you

I love your crunchy crust;

And if my mum would let me,

I’d eat you till I bust.

On Thursday 27th June we will be performing these poems in class, with one child being chosen to perform it in the competition.

This week we have learnt about Levi’s Pokemon cards, Issa’s Pokemon handbook, George’s penguin, Gabriel’s cuddly beat bug and Guy’s cuddly bear. Next week it is the turn of the merpeople table for Show and Tell (Albie, Ranga, Nicole Lee, Coco, Grace and Sean).

On World Book Day this year, the children were invited to participate in an illustration project. All of the children learnt the story of ‘Surf and Turf’ and helped create the images for the book. The book has now been completed and is ready for printing at the cost of £6.00. All proceeds of the book will be donated to Book Aid International which is a charity that buys books for libraries in other countries where children have little chance of having access to books. More information about the work of the charity can be found on the Book Aid website. If you would like to order a copy of the book, please complete the order form attached, along with the payment in cash only, in a named envelope and return to the Year One classroom by Monday 24th June.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

A Drizzly Week

This week we have smiled during the drizzly weather to complete another week of learning.

In English we have have continued learning about plastic pollution and have generated ideas on how to reduce our plastic waste. We have planned a formal letter to our local MP to tell him our ideas. We will be writing the letter next week.

In maths we have continued learning about fractions. We have learnt how to find a 1/2 or 1/4 of an amount.

In science we have learnt about the diet of different animals, identifying: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

In D.T we have been learning about a balanced diet and where different foods come from.

During the week the children completed their end of year phonics quiz. They all worked incredibly hard and the results of the quiz will be included in the children’s end of year reports.

This week we have enjoyed learning about Valeri’s Horrid Henry’s joke book and Toby’s homemade book. Next week it is the turn of the crab table for Show and Tell (Gabriel, Issa, Levi, Lewis, George and Guy).

We are looking forward to seeing you all at the Summer Fair.

Have a great weekend,

The Year One Team

A Plastic Problem

This week we have been learning about plastic pollution in our oceans.

Did you know that scientists predict there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050 if we don’t do something soon? In Willow Class we felt that this is something we need to change.

We designed persuasive posters to explain to people what is happening and how people can help. Next week we will be writing a formal letter to tell people how to reduce our plastic waste.

This week in maths we have been learning about fractions. We have learnt that fractions means pieces and that the bottom number (denominator) tells you how many pieces to make. In the Willow Class Pizzeria we enjoyed making pizzas and putting different ingredients on each slice. The rules for our pizza were as follows:

4 quarters must have cheese

1 quarter must have pineapple

2 quarters must have pepperoni

The final quarter could have any topping we liked!

Here are our delicious pizzas:

In phonics we have been revising the sounds we have learnt this year. Below is a website which has a selection of phonic games that the children can play at home ready for our phonics quiz next week.

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/

This week we have enjoyed learning about Lucy’s unicorn, princess and bunny, Matilda’s unicorn, Jan’s periodic table, Lily’s tooth and Elizabeth’s teddy. Next week it is the turn of the killer whales table for Show and Tell (Toby, Jiyong, Nicole S, Finn, Valeri and Caitie).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Book Week

What an exciting week we’ve had in Year 1. This week we have been participating in our school’s Book Week with the theme of ‘pure imagination’.

On Tuesday as a school, we participated in various activities. With Miss Dyer and Miss Luetchford we used the poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright as inspiration and drew various items that we would put into this magical box. With Miss Manhire and Mr Stocking we played exciting games on the field. Mr Peck and Miss Radi organised some fabulous music and drama workshops where we learnt the poem ‘Nobody Loves, Everybody Hates me’ and finally with Mrs Warner and Mrs Bibby, we made our own Jabberwockys from plasticine.  It was such an exciting day.

On Wednesday we participated in a ‘poetry and drama’ workshop where we learnt the poem ‘The Jabberwocky’. We then performed the poem in the hall.

On Friday we met the poet Stewart Henderson  who has written the ‘Poetry Emotion’ series. He told us about his life as a poet and taught how to write different poems. Ours was about a lost gorilla!

A huge thank you to the PTA for funding the exciting workshops and author visit for us. It really helped to make the week such a fantastic experience for the children.

In class we have read the book ‘Flotsam’ by David Wiesner. In the story a young boy finds an old camera discarded on the beach. He decides to develop the photographs and when he looks at them he realises that the camera has taken photographs of magical underwater worlds.

We used various materials to make our own magical underwater setting. Using the poem ‘The Sound Collector’ we imagined what sounds we would hear in these magical settings. We then wrote our own version of the poem.

Thank you to all of the children who brought in a book to share during Book Week. It was so wonderful to hear about the different books the children enjoy reading at home.

This week we have enjoyed learning about Lenny’s encyclopedia, Ben’s football, Marcus’s seal, Caroline’s seal and postcard, Eliza’s teddy and Theo’s rubix cube and slinky.

After half term, it is the turn of the jellyfish table for Show and Tell (Lily, Elizabeth, Eddie, Jan, Matilda and Lucy).

We hope you have a lovely half term,

The Year One Team.

Whale Experts!

This week, we wrote our amazing information pages all about whales. We made sure to include a short, snappy title and of course lots of interesting facts.

Next week is our ‘Book Week’ where we will participating in various exciting activities. Miss Luetchford has a mystery book that we will be using throughout the week to stimulate our writing. We look forward to the book being revealed on Monday.

In maths we have been learning how to double numbers. We have learnt that double 6 is the same as 6 + 6 or 6 x 2. We drew pictures to help us solve the equation and some of us began to use our knowledge of partitioning to help us double two-digit numbers.

E.g. Double 24:

Double 20 = 40

Double 4 = 8

40 + 8 = 48

We have started to learn about division and will continue this learning next week.

In art we have been learning about the artist Lowry and his seascape paintings. We used pastels to create our own Lowry inspired sea side picture.

In phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

  • oa (goat, boat)
  • oe (toe)
  • o-e (phone, home)
  • ow (blow, snow)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This week we have enjoyed learning about Albie’s pokemon book, Grace’s dolls, Coco’s teddies, Ranga’s picture and Nicky’s teddies. Next week it is the turn of the shark table for Show and Tell (Ben, Lenny, Marcus, Caroline, Theo and Eliza).

Congratulations to Year 5 on their amazing assembly about the Victorians. We especially liked all of the songs.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Wonderful Whales

This week we have been learning all about whales, including a humpback whale which features in our class text ‘The Snail and the Whale’.

Did you know that humpback whales can grow up to 16 metres long? However, this is nothing compared to the blue whale, which can grow up to a staggering 30 metres long. We have organised our facts by generating ideas for different sub-headings to use in our information pages next week. Be sure to quiz us on our fascinating whale facts.

In maths we have been learning how to double numbers. We used a range of concrete resources such as numicon, dienes and counters to show that doubling is the same as multiplying by 2.

In science we have continued learning about animals including humans. This week we compared a human to a different animal, noting any similarities and differences.

In phonics we have been reviewing the following sounds:

ee (see)

ea (tea)

e-e (eve)

ey (monkey)

-y (happy)

There are words containing these sounds for the children to practise available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This week we enjoyed learning about Issa’s cuddly Pluto, Levi’s pictures, George’s robot hamster ‘Tubby’ and Gabriel’s book ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. Next week it is the turn of the Merpeople table (Albie, Grace, Coco, Nicole L, Sean and Ranga) for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Willow Class Explorers

This week we had our fantastic class assembly where we took St Matthew’s on a tour of the world’s rainforests. The children recalled their fascinating facts and then retold the story of Where the Wild Things Are. Everyone spoke with a  clear voice, but we missed Lewis who had injured his arm. We hope you get better soon Lewis!

In English this week, we wrote our newspaper reports describing what happened when the whale got stuck on the beach. The children worked hard to include a snappy headline and the key information.

In maths we have been learning how to represent a multiplication equation as an array. Next week we will be learning how to double numbers.

In phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

aw (yawn, dawn)

or (door)

au (caught, haunt)

Below is a link to a series of games that the children can play to practise these sounds: http://www.ictgames.com/literacy.html

This week we enjoyed learning about Caitie’s light up lamp, Toby’s cricket ball, Jiyong’s Power Ranger, Finn’s moon ball and toy.  Next week it is the turn of the crab table (Levi, Issa, George, Gabriel, Lewis and Guy) for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Extra, Extra, Read All About It!

Welcome back to the Summer Term. We hope you all had a restful holiday and enjoyed the sunny Easter weekend.

This week, we started our new core text ‘The Snail and the Whale’.

On Tuesday the children looked at the cover of the book and made predictions about what they thought would happen in the story.

Next week the children will be writing a newspaper report, describing the moment the whale became stuck on the beach.

On Wednesday we looked at various newspaper articles and identified the key features. We then started to plan our newspaper report to explain what happened to the whale. Next week we will be writing these reports ensuring to include a snappy headline and key vocabulary.

In maths we have been learning how to multiply two numbers together. First we used the language of ‘lots of’. For example: 3 X 5 is the same as 3 lots of 5. We then looked at making equal groups and next week we will be using arrays to represent a multiplication equation.

In history we have started to learn about seasides in the past by looking at photographs of beaches during the Victorian era. We studied the photographs carefully and wrote sentences to explain what we have found out and what we would like to find out.

In phonics we have been reviewing the sounds we have learnt so far. Below is a link to a game for the children to play to review their sounds:

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/PicnicOnPluto.html

As our new topic is ‘By The Sea’ we have new seaside themed groups:

  • Jellyfishes
  • Sharks
  • Killer Whales
  • Merpeople
  • Crabs

Next week it is the turn of the killer whales table for Show and Tell (Toby, Jiyong, Nicole S, Finn, Valeri and Caitie).

Next Friday it will be our class assembly where we will be teaching you all about rainforests. We hope you enjoy hearing all of the facts we have learnt!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

Ugly Bug Ball

This week we explored the pond wildlife at Fishpond’s Wood. We observed the different plants that grew there as well as the animals that live both in and along the water’s edge. We got very excited when we spotted a family of ducks hiding in the bushes. Then using bug hunters, we went on a mini beast hunt to see what creepy crawlies we could find!

After exploring the pond we then took part in our class Easter egg hunt and happily chomped on our chocolate treats.

In maths this week we have been completing our termly assessments to consolidate all of our learning.

Next term we will be starting our topic ‘By The Sea’. The first book we will be reading is ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson.

Below is an attachment to an overview of our learning for the Summer Term:

Curriculum Map- Summer

This week we have enjoyed learning about Ben’s dinosaur bone and Jan’s animal atlas in Show and Tell.

This week the children all took home a set of real and alien words for them to practise over the Easter holidays. The children need to use their robot arms to sound out and blend each of the words carefully. This is to help consolidate their phonics knowledge, ready for the final term.

We hope you all have a restful Easter break,

The Year One Team

A Potion for Max

In English this week we have been writing our own version of Where the Wild Things Are. We drew story maps to help us sequence the events and verbally told the story to our partner. As a class we then created a word bank of effective vocabulary we wanted to include in our retells. Please come and read our stories as we’re really proud of them!

In maths we have been continuing to explore measurements. We have learnt how to measure in cm, remembering that we need to start at 0 cm to make an accurate measurement. We have begun to explore the weight and mass of different objects. We used cubes to measure the weight of different items in the classroom and then compared the items using the mathematical symbols < > and = .

This week when we visited Fishpond’s Woods, we were asked by the Wild Things to create a potion for Max. They gave us a set of ingredients that we needed to find in the woods in order to make the potion.

Next week it will be our last session at Fishpond’s Wood. For part of the session we will be exploring the pond, please ensure the children bring their wellies to school.

This week we have enjoyed learning about Guy’s shark bone, Toby’s battleships, Eddie’s book ‘Over 1000 Fantastic Animal Facts’, Nicky’s art set, Elizabeth’s cuddly and Theo’s ant glasses. Next week it is the turn of the Billy Goats Gruff table (Ben, Caitie, Jan, Finn and Nicole S) for Show and Tell.

This week in phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

ea (tea, sea)

ee (green, seen)

e-e (evening)

Attached is a Powerpoint that has a variety of real and alien words for the children to practise sounding out and blending.
