We Are Poets

In English we have explored different styles of poetry. We learnt that some poems can rhyme, some can be silly, some can form shapes but all poems need words.

Some children then felt inspired to write their own poems on a whiteboard.

These are now in our class poetry book.

In class we read the story ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers. We then wrote a list a poem describing the setting and the character’s emotions.

In maths we have been learning about part, whole models. We then started to use these part whole models to solve addition equations.

In D.T we learnt how to create a moving picture by making a lever or a slider. Here are our amazing products:

Next week we will be completing our history unit about the moon landing and space exploration by learning about Mae C Jemison, before starting our geography unit after half term.

We are looking forward to sharing our song ‘Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow’ with you next week at our Harvest Service.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Year Two Blog Friday 8th October 2021

This week we planned and wrote our newspaper reports about the Lonely Beast.  We made sure to include a catchy headline, subheading, key information and a picture to match the information.

In maths we have been continuing addition and subtraction, focusing on our number bonds to 100.

In science we performed an experiment to test the suitability of different materials to make an umbrella. We each chose the materials we thought would be best, predicted what we thought might happen and then tested the materials to see if our predictions were correct.

Next Thursday your child can take home their books from their time in Year One. Please can your child bring in a sturdy, named bag ready to go.

Congratulations to Izzy and Oscar who have been elected as our School Councillors and to Bobby and Senara who will continue as our Faith Champions.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville 🙂

Year One Moon Experts (part two)

This week we wrote our information pages to share our fascinating facts about the moon. These are now on display in our classroom.  Next week we will be learning about poetry and reading the book ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers.

In maths we have been learning to compare numbers using the mathematical symbols < > =. We have also been learning about ordinal numbers. Next week we will be learning how to use a number line.

This week  we went to St Matthew’s Church where Mother Helen and Father Alistair reenacted a baptism to show the children what happens during the service.

Thank you to the  parents who helped us walk to the church and Mother Helen and Father Alistair for inviting us to the church; it was a great way to end our unit on Christian baptism. Next week will start our new unit ‘Who is the Saint of our School?

Congratulations to Duncan and Clemmie who have been appointed as the Faith Champions for our class. Mr Quinn said that they both wrote fantastic letters detailing their hopes for the year.

Next week your child will be able to take home their books from their time in Reception class. Please can your child bring in a named bag on Thursday 14th October to use to carry the books.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon  🙂

Year Two Blog

This week in maths we have been continuing to learn about the place value of numbers within 100. We have begun to learn about addition and subtraction and the relationship between the two operations. For example:

If 8 + 2 = 10, 10 – 2 = 8.

In science  we have continued to look at everyday materials and this week we conducted an experiment to see if materials change by bending, twisting, stretching and squashing. We put some materials in water to see what would happen and begun to predict what would happen to materials when heated.

In English we have been learning about the features of a newspaper report. We read some First News to show us what a good one looks like. Then began planning our own newspaper report about the Lonely Beast.

On Spelling Shed this week, the children can practise spelling common exception words (challenge words) and words containing ‘-ge’ (change, strange, range).

The children  really enjoyed out door P.E  (before the rain came).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville 🙂

Year One Moon Experts

This week we started our new book ‘Sidney, Stella and the Moon’.

This a story about twins Sidney and Stella  who love doing everything together – everything except sharing. In the story a quarrel over a bouncy ball creates a moon-sized problem when they accidentally smash the moon into pieces!  The siblings have to work together to solve the problem and find a new moon.

When we finished this story, it got us thinking about fiction and non-fiction. We knew this story must be fiction because the moon wouldn’t be broken by a bouncy ball. This got us thinking about everything else we knew about the moon.

Please quiz us at home about our knowledge of the moon, as we are now ‘Moon Experts’. We can tell you all about what it’s like on the moon, missions to the moon and we have learnt some great ‘Did you know?’ facts. Next week we will be using this knowledge to write information pages about the moon.

In maths we have been  learning how to compare numbers and amounts using the mathematical symbols < > =

In science we have learnt about absorbent and waterproof materials. We conducted an experiment to see which material would be suitable for a bag to  help keep items dry.

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

ir (whirl and twirl)

or (shut the door)

There are words containing these sounds for the children to practise available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

Year Two Blog Friday 24th Septemeber

This week we have been continuing place value in maths and practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We used a 100 square and began to recognise patterns in the number sequences.

In writing we have been learning how to write a diary entry. This week we have planned our diary entry, writing as the Lonely Beast. Next week we will publish our work.

In science we have been continuing our learning about materials. We learnt about the suitability of materials for different jobs. We asked big questions such as “Would jelly be a suitable material for a table?” and “Why are bricks suitable for buildings?”

On Spelling Shed, there are words for your child to practise reading and spelling that end in ‘dge’.

Every Thursday a new focus will be uploaded to your child’s Spelling Shed account. This week we have also included common exception words which we will be continued throughout the year.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Miss Glanville

How to Make Bob’s Favourite Sandwich

This week we have written a set of instructions to teach people how to make Bob’s favourite cucumber sandwiches. We have learnt that a good set of instructions will include:

  • Numbered steps
  • Bossy verbs
  • Pictures
  • Each step will be written on a new line

We then used our instructions to make the sandwich for Bob.

In maths we have been learning to represent numbers using different mathematical equipment.

In science we have been learning about transparent and opaque materials. We have learnt that transparent materials let the light through so we can see through them. Opaque materials block the light which means we cannot see through them and this causes them to form a shadow. We then selected appropriate materials to make a shadow puppet.

In phonics we have been learning the following sound:

air (that’s not fair)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

Congratulations to Clemmie and Patricio, who have been elected as our School Councillors.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂

A Strange and Mysterious Planet

This week we have been learning how to write a description of a setting. We looked at a strange planet called Pandora and thought of adjectives to describe what we could see. We then wrote these descriptions as sentences in our books.

In maths we have been learning how to count forwards and backwards. We have completed number sequences as numerals and pictures.

In science we have continued learning about different materials and their properties. We helped Bob who needed some new items for his rocket. We told him which material would be best for a: chair, waterbottle, bookshelf and window by describing their properties.

In phonics we have been revising the following sounds:

ar (start the car)

oo (poo at the zoo)

There are words containing these sounds for the children to practise available on the Spelling Shed website: https://play.spellingshed.com/#/login

This half term we are learning about a Christian baptism. We would love to see any photos of the children at their own baptism service to display in our classroom. If you are happy to share these photos, please could the children bring in a copy of the photo next week or email a copy to the School Office.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Wednesday. Below is an attachment of the PowerPoint used to help explain routines in Year One.

Welcome to Year 1 new

Year Two Blog

This week we have started our new core text ‘The Lonely Beast’.

This is a story about a creature who is longing to find some friends so he departs on an adventure to the city.

In maths we have been learning about place value using place value grids, dienes and counters.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session on Tuesday 14th September.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Bennett, Mrs Bibby, Mrs Killy and Mrs Glanville 🙂

A Very Sneaky Alien

This week we have started reading our class text ‘Bob Man on the Moon’.

We learnt about Bob’s day on the moon and all of the jobs he has to complete inside his rocket. Unfortunately, Bob’s favourite sandwich was stolen by a very sneaky alien.

To help Bob, we wrote wanted posters describing the alien’s appearance and personality. Our amazing posters helped Bob capture the alien and reclaim his lunch.

In maths we have been practising our counting. The children have also enjoyed playing ‘Guess My Number’ where they ask me questions to see if they can work out what number is on my board. Some of the most successful questions have been:

“Is it a 1-digit or a 2-digit number?”

“Is it odd or even?”

“Is it greater than…”

“Is it less than…”

We are looking forward to seeing you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ session next week.

Miss Luetchford and Mrs Sharon 🙂
