Year One Blog: Fascinating Facts

This week we have been continuing to learn lots of fascinating facts about rainforests. Did you know that algae grows on a sloth’s back? This helps them camouflage in trees to help hide from predators such as snakes and jaguars. Next week we will be writing information pages all about rainforests.

In maths we have been measuring capacity using liquid and rice. We measured water using the language of ‘full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty’.

When measuring we noticed that different jugs could hold different amounts and decided that this wasn’t an accurate measurement.  We then measured rice using the standard unit of measurement- ml and L- to ensure it was fair.

Due to the wet and windy weather this week we were unable to visit Fishpond’s Wood.  Now that the sun finally seems to be out, we are hoping to be in the woods next week.

This week’s book recommendation is by Rodrigo:

“I am recommending the book ‘Mr Happy’ by Roger Hargreaves.

In the story Mr Happy is always happy and he lives in a cottage. I think it is a funny story because when he meets someone who is sad he has to make them feel better by bouncing around. The setting of the story is a forest and it takes place on a sunny day.”

Next week it is the turn of Micheal, Charlie, Magnus and Daisy for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Year One Blog: How To Spot A Wild Thing

This week we wrote our guides informing readers on how to spot a Wild Thing.  We included lots of adjectives to describe their appearance and explained where they lived and what they like to eat.

On Thursday we celebrated ‘World Book Day’ and dressed up as our favourite characters from different stories. To celebrate the day we participated in a whole school parade to showcase our amazing outfits. Thank you for your donations towards the Book Aid Trust. In the assembly the children learnt about how their donations help bring books to children around the world.

In maths we have been learning how to measure length and height. We measured different items in the classroom using cubes and then learnt how to measure in cm.

In R.E we have started our new unit of learning called ‘Why is Easter the most important festival for Christians?’ This week we learnt about the importance of Palm Sunday which is the beginning of Holy Week. We made our own palms to reenact the story.

This week we have completed our D.T project to design and make a story puppet. The children all designed their puppet and wrote a list of what materials and equipment they would need to complete their project. Here are our amazing products:

in phonics we have been reviewing the sounds we have learnt so far. Below is a link to a PowerPoint which contains words from a previous phonics quiz for the children to practise at home.

Year One Blog: Meeting the Wild Things

This week we have started our new core text ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak.

250px-Where_The_Wild_Things_Are_(book)_cover

We generated adjectives to describe the appearance and characteristics of the Wild Things and used plasticine to create our own character for the story. Here are our terrifying Wild Things:

In maths we have been measuring objects using non-standard units of measurement. We will be continuing with measuring next week.

This week we started learning about rainforests. On Friday we were joined by Freya’s mum who taught us lots about life in a rainforest. We found out about the different animals, the four layers and the deforestation for palm oil. It was extremely informative and the children loved hearing about the different animals. A huge thank you to Freya’s mum.

This week we started our D.T project to design and make a story puppet. The children have designed their puppets and selected the materials and equipment they will need. We will be making our puppets next Friday.

This week’s book recommendation is written by Lizzie:

“I am recommending the book ‘Polly Parrot Picks a Pirate’.

I enjoyed this book because it was really funny and the pirates are a bit silly. Even though he’s a pirate, one of them is afraid of a little spider. Polly who is a parrot uses perseverance in the story because when trying to find a pirate for a pet she has to keep trying again and again. I found it very funny.”

Next Thursday we will be celebrating World Book Day. The children are invited to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. They can also bring in a copy of the book to share with the class. If the children choose to come into school dressed as a character, we are asking them to provide a £1.00 donation to go towards the charity Book Aid. We look forward to seeing all of the different story characters.

Next week it is the turn of Theo, Freya, Emily, Georgia and Jamie for Show and Tell.

We hope you have restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Year One Blog: Story Boxes

This week we enjoyed making our story boxes. We used a variety of materials when making our beautiful creations.

Here are our fantastic story boxes. Can you guess the story?

In maths this week we have been completing our termly assessments to consolidate all of our learning. A copy of these assessments were handed out during this week’s parent consultations.

This week’s book recommendation is written by Micheal.

“I am recommending the book ‘The Twelve Tasks of Hercules’.

The story is about a man called Hercules and he is the son of Zeus who is the King of all Gods. It is an adventure story because he has to go to all of these different places to complete these different tasks to become a true hero and God. I really liked it when he tried to kill the lion with a wooden club. He hit the lion on it’s head and the lion pounced on  him but Hercules defeated it! I would give it 10 out of 10!”

We hope you all have a restful break,

Year One Blog: We Are Storytellers

This week it was National Storytelling week and in Willow Class we have been busy retelling our own version of a modern fairy tale ‘Into the Forest’. Last week the children planned the story on a story map and then wrote their version on Tuesday. We were all blown away by the descriptive detail the children included in their writing. They used included lots of descriptive details to make their stories interesting and should feel extremely proud of all of their hard work. We can’t wait for you to read them at parents’ evening next week.

In maths we have been learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones. Next week we will be reviewing the key skills taught this term by consolidating our reasoning and problem solving skills.

Next Thursday (13th February) we will be making a fairy tale story box. The children will need to bring in a shoe box (or a small box) that can be used to create the fairy tale setting. A few examples are below:

This week’s book recommendation is written by Chloe:

“I am recommending the book ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’.

I like this book because although it can be a bit scary there are some exciting parts like when Hermoine travels back in time and the Professor turns into a werewolf. I really like the characters in the story and Harry Potter is my favourite. I think it is little bit sad but it is still funny. ”

This week the children have participated in a phonics quiz to review their sound knowledge. At parents evening we will share with you the sounds to practise with your children over half term.

Next week it is the turn of Nina, Oliver, Arto and Ana for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Year One: Traditional and Modern Fairy Tales

This week we have been comparing traditional and modern fairy tales. Using our core text ‘Into the Forest’ and ‘Shrek’ we have looked at the similarities and differences between traditional stories such as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and fairy tales that are written today.

Next week we will be writing our own version of a modern fairy tale by retelling the story of ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. This week the children have planned their story using a story map to sequence the events.

In science we enjoyed learning about the parts of a plant you can eat, although not everyone was a fan of the radish!

In maths we have been comparing number sentences using the mathematical symbols < > =.

E.g.

13 + 5 > 16 – 4

12 + 3 = 20- 5

On Thursday 13th February we will be making a fairy tale story box. The week commencing Monday 10th February the children will need to bring in a shoe box (or a small box) that can be used to create the fairy tale setting. A few examples are below:

This week’s book recommendation is written by Daisy.

“I am recommending the book ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donalson. This story is about  a shell. A crab wants it, then an anemone comes and stings a big fish on the nose. I like this book because it’s about sharing, if people want the same thing they can share it like if they had a skipping rope then two people can swing the skipping rope and one person can skip over it.  That’s sharing.”

Next week it is the turn of Emi, Lily, Kieran and Lizzie for Show and Tell.

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team

Year One: A Letter From A King

This week we read the traditional tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

After we had finished the story we were surprised to receive a letter from the King asking for our help.  The letter read:

Dear Willow Class,

I am writing to you to ask for your help. As you are aware, Jack has recently found a golden harp and hen which allows him to make golden eggs. This means that Jack has become one of the richest boys in the kingdom. Some people feel that Jack shouldn’t be allowed to keep the golden harp because it is stolen property and now the whole kingdom can’t agree. Please can you help me decide what to do? I look forward to hearing your arguments for and against Jack’s actions and your help in sorting this matter is greatly appreciated.

Yours Faithfully,

King Charles

We had a class discussion debating whether Jack should be allowed to keep the money or if he should be made to pay it back.  We then wrote letters to the King explaining our thinking.

In maths we have been using numicon to calculate related addition and subtraction facts.

E.g. If 7+3=10, then 3+7=10, 10-3 =7, and 10-7=3

In science we have been learning about the different parts of a plant. We dissected a plant carefully and looked at the different parts such as root, leaf, petal, pollen and stem.

This week’s book recommendation is written by Lily.

“I am recommending the book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. I am reading it at home and have enjoyed it so far. In the story George feeds Grandma the medicine and she gets taller and taller and taller and smashes through the house. It is a funny story and will cheer you up when you are feeling sad. ”

We hope you have a restful weekend

Year Three Blog Friday 17th January

This week’s blog is written by Lucas and Nelson:

“This week we have started our new book ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl. We have written a non-chronological report about one of the characters in the story. I have written about Mr Fox (Nelson). I have also written about Mr Fox (Lucas). We have told the readers about the character’s appearance,  habitat, diet and personality. Mr Fox likes to eat chicken and dumplings.

In maths we have been learning about multiplication and division.  We have multiplied a 2-digit number by a 1 digit number.

In science we have been learning about light and dark. We tested materials to see if they were reflective or not.

In R.E we have been learning about what it takes to be a good leader.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.”

Year 1: Have You Seen These Fairy Tale Villains?

This week we have continued reading our core text ‘Into the Forest’. We noticed that a wolf was hiding behind one of the trees and this got us to thinking about what other fairy tale villains could be lurking in the woods. To help people catch the villains we wrote a wanted poster describing a fairy tale villain. We worked hard to include adjectives to describe their appearance and characteristics.

In maths this week we have been learning how to use a number line to solve a subtraction problem. We counted backwards and used empty number lines to solve a range of subtraction equations. We have also been revising our number bonds to and 20.

In art we have been learning about the artist William Morris.

We will be making our own William Morris inspired painting. This week we focused on sketching leaves and flowers from observation.

In class we have been looking at our favourite stories to read. The children have been invited to share their favourite books with the class by writing down the name of a book that they would recommend to their peers. Each week we will share one of the recommendations with you on our class blog.

This week’s recommendation is written by Miss Luetchford:

I am recommending the book ‘The Dark’ by Lemony Snicket.

This is a story about a young boy called Laszlo who is afraid of the dark.  In the story the dark lives in the same house as Laszlo but spends most of his time in the basement. One night, the dark comes upstairs to Laszlo’s room, and Laszlo goes down to the basement.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story involves overcoming our worries, which we all  need to be reminded to do from time to time. The illustrations help bring the story to life. I hope you enjoy reading it too!

In phonics we have been learning the following sounds:

ir (girl, twirl)

oo (zoo, too)

u-e (huge, brute)

Attached is the link to the Spelling Shed for the children to be able to revise these sounds: https://play.edshed.co/login

We hope you have a restful weekend,

The Year One Team.
