Year 3 Are ‘Caroling’ Along Nicely

This week’s blog is written by Harry and Edward.

This week we went to the Royal Festival Hall to sing carols with an organ. It had 7866 pipes! My favourite carol was ‘Ding Dong Merrily On High’ (Harry). My favourite carol was ‘Winter Fantasy’ (Edward). It was lots of fun.

This week we have been learning how to write a diary entry. We know that a diary needs to be written in the first person, past tense and must include interesting details.

In our diary entry we wrote as Major Glad or Major Dizzy., describing the day the fire broke out under the floorboards. We hope you enjoy reading them.

In maths we have been learning about our 3,4 and 8 times tables. We have been learning how to multiply and divide. We are moving on to adding and subtracting numbers.

In science we have been learning about magnets. We have learnt how magnets attract and repel different objects.

In art we have been learning how to weave different materials.

Next week we are performing our carols by candlelight.  Don’t forget that Christmas is nearly here!

Year One Blog: You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch

This week we read the poem ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough .

We looked carefully at the poem and identified the ‘secret strings’ that held the poem together:

  • Includes sound words
  • The sound describes the object
  • Each new description is written on a new line
  • Each stanza is four lines long
  • The second and fourth line rhyme

We then wrote our own version of the poem where we described the sounds that The Grinch might steal at Christmas time.

Here are some of our amazing descriptions:

The Grinch came this morning

With a sack on top if his sleigh

Put every sound into his bag

And carried them away

“The ticking of the clock” (Grover)

“The popping of the cracker” (Oliver)

“The banging of the door” (Theo)

“The ringing of the bells” (Jamie)

“The crackling of the fire” (Sophia)

“The roaring of Santa’s sleigh” (Nina)

“The singing of the carols” (Lily)

“The chatting of the children” (John)

“The laughing of Santa” (Charlie)

“The whooshing of the sleigh” (Kieran)

“The laughing of Aunt Mildred” (Michael)

“The crackling of the fire ” (Emily)

“The crunching of the candy cane” (Arto)

“The banging of the drum” (Emi)

“The creaking of the stairs” (Lizzie)

“The whooshing of the sleigh” (Georgia)

“The giggling of the girls” (Ana)

“The rumbling of Santa’s tummy” (James)

“The giggling of the children” (Ire)

“The whooshing of the sleigh” (Magnus)

“The cackling of The Grinch” (Mariam)

“The ringing of the phone” (Chloe)

“The popping of the cracker” (Freya)

“The ding dong of the bells” (Rodrigo)

“The crunching of the snowflakes” (Daisy)

In maths we have been reviewing our learning and completing our termly assessments.

In science we have learnt about camouflage and how this helps animals to hide from predators or help them to catch their prey.

Next Wednesday afternoon we will be having our KS1 Christmas party. The children are invited to bring party clothes in a named bag that they can change into for the afternoon.  Outside the classroom is a sign-up sheet to donate any food or party drinks, which will be greatly appreciated. Please ensure that all food is nut free.

Please note that next week there is no Show and Tell.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

What a busy week we’ve had in Phase One.

Now that we are in the season of Advent, the children are learning about the first arrival of Jesus in R.E lessons and assemblies.

Years one and two performed in the FSU and KS1 Christmas production of ‘Jesus’ Christmas Party’.

The children all worked incredibly hard to remember their cues, learn their lines and perform each song with a  big smile on their face. Thank you to everyone who helped put this performance together and for showing your support. I can’t wait to watch the  year threes perform in their carol concert on Tuesday 17th December. The Christmas season has officially begun.

A note from Mrs Sharon and Mrs Killy, please can you ensure your child’s book bag is in school on a Tuesday ready to have their book changed for the week.

I hope you have a lovely time at the Christmas Fair and a restful weekend,

Miss Luetchford 🙂

Another Week in Year Threeville Friday 6th December 2019

This week’s blog is written by Lily D and Cruz.

This week we have been learning about colours and clothing in French. My favourite colour is rose (pink) because it sounds like a rose flower (Lily D). My favourite colour is bleu (blue) because it is the colour of the sky and it is a nice and bright colour (Cruz).

In English we have been learning how to include reported and direct speech into our writing.

In maths we have been learning about our 3, 4 and 8 times tables. We used bar models to help us in our calculations.

In our reading lessons we have started the book ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’. We have sequenced the events so far on a story map and talked about the relationships between the characters.

In the Iron Age they made big hills so that they could see if an enemy was coming and used pots for their cooking and storage. To show our history knowledge we have been making our own hill forts and sketched a design for a pot.

In singing assemblies we have been practising the carols for our concert in two weeks.

We hope you enjoy the Christmas Fair, we look forward to seeing you there.

Our Christmas Show

This week’s blog is written by Valeri and Coco.

This week we performed our Christmas Show to the school and all of the parents and carers. We felt scared and excited to say our lines. Our favourite song was ‘Kings are Travelling’.

In maths we have been learning about money. We have sorted coins and started to make different amounts. We have learnt how to make a total such as  50p + 50p makes 100p which is £1.

In science we have been learning about what animals need to survive. They need oxygen, food, water, sleep and shelter.

In R.E we have been learning about Saints. Saints are people who help spread the word of God.

We are looking forward to the Christmas Fair this weekend.

Jesus’ Christmas Party

We hope you all enjoyed our F.S.U and KS1 production of ‘Jesus’ Christmas Party’. The children have worked very hard to learn all of the songs and it was wonderful to see them perform their lines with such clarity and confidence.

In English this week we have read the story ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers.

The children wrote shape poems describing the rocket used in the story. They also generated adjectives to describe the setting and how the boy was feeling when he crashed after his rocket failed him. Next week, we will be using these descriptions to write a list poem.

In maths we have been learning to identify how many tens and ones are in a 2-digit number. The children used base 10 materials to represent a chosen number.

Next week it is the turn of the ‘But Martin!’ table for Show and Tell (Charlie, Lizzie, Theo and Michael).

We look forward to seeing you all the Christmas Fair,

The Year One Team

…Till I Was Sick on the Floor…

This week’s blog is written by Aaron and Benedict.

In English we have been typing our letters to our grandparents asking them about the toys they had when they were young. My grandma (Gaga) wrote a reply and told me about a game called ‘Ludo’.

In maths we have been learning how to multiply a number and divide by 8.

Did you know that 64 divided by 8 = 8 and 8 x 8 = 64. A  way to remember this is: ‘I ate and ate till I was sick on the floor, 8 x 8 = 64.’

In science we have been learning about forces and magnets. We have completed a fair test using magnets and paper clips to test a magnets strength.

In music we have been practising playing the recorder and in singing assemblies, we have been rehearsing for our carol concert.

In history we have learnt how bronze was made.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Benedict, Aaron and the year 3 team.

We Are Storytellers

This week we’ve been busy in year one preparing to write our own version of the story ‘Beegu’. We have used story maps to help sequence the events and will be writing the story on Thursday, making sure we include lots of descriptive language.

In science we sorted animals into a Venn diagram.

Next week it will be the performance of our Christmas show ‘Jesus’ Christmas Party’. The children have been very busy practising their lines and songs and we hope you enjoy their performance.

Next week it is the turn of the Beegu table for Show and Tell (Oliver, John, Emi, Georgia, Grover and Magnus).

We hope you had a great weekend,

The Year One Team

Life in Year 3

This week’s blog is written by Ella Burton, Bella Carey and Lily Varma.

“In English we have been writing letters to our grandparents telling them about toys because we have been reading a book about toys called ‘Major Glad and Major Dizzy. I wrote about my dolls called Mia, Emma and Lily (Ella).

In maths we have been learning about multiplication and division.  3 x 4 = 12 so 12 divided by 4 = 3.

In science we have been learning about magnetic forces. This week we investigated the strength of different magnets.

In music we have been learning about the beat, rhythm and pulse of different songs. We have been learning an African dance which we happily perform for our parents this weekend.

In history we have been learning about the Bronze and Iron Age. We have looked at causes and consequences such as when people began farming they no longer needed to rely on hunting.

The Year 3 sign language club is up and running. Thank you to Miss Dyer for helping us organise this club. We’ve started to learn the letters in the alphabet.”

Year Two Blog 15th November 2019

Dear Parents/Carers

It was lovely to see you all for parents evening this week, and I hope it was a helpful experience for everyone. For Spelling shed this week the children are either looking at the /l/ sound spelt –le or the /z/ sound spelt zz or s. I have set maths shed this week. There is a variety of number bond games to practise that all of the children can access.

In maths this week, we finished learning about money. The children learnt how to find the difference in two amounts, how to find the correct change and how to work through two-step problems. In English we finished working towards and wrote our stories that mirrored Journey. The children worked very hard at their writing and we have some wonderful stories. In topic, the children learnt about different landmarks in Australia and how the Isle of Wight and Australia are similar and different. In Art, the children designed postcards with different Isle of Wight landmarks on. In R.E., the children thought about Remembrance day and what was special to them.

This half term we will be learning and rehearsing our Christmas production. The children in Year 2 will be doing the acting parts. Our practises are in full swing, and the children have been brilliant at learning the songs and practising their lines. Please can you continue to practise your child’s line with them at home.

Looking to next week, we will be editing and publishing our stories, looking at the concept of different in greater detail in maths and in Science we are looking at what animals need to survive. In R.E. we are learning about Saints.

The winner of our star of the week this week is Belle, congratulations!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Mr. Stocking and the Year 2 team.
